Default If I disappear now & then...

… it will be because I really have my work cut out for me. This is the to do list for the new house, mind you, this of course doesn't include any work that needs to be done on my existing house, or the work that I need to do to earn a living.

· Tear out and dispose of about 220 square yards of carpeting
· Tear out and dispose of about 600 square feet of tile
· Carefully remove and label all baseboards throughout
· Provide a schematic to coordinate with the labeling of the baseboards
· Prep concrete slab (remove all drywall mud clean the concrete and fill low spots with self leveling compound)
· Clean ENTIRE interior of the house, from the ceiling to the concrete slab
· Paint ceilings
· Paint walls
· Paint trim
· Install nearly 2500 square feet of tile
· Reinstall baseboards
· Design entertainment casework for den
· Build entertainment casework for den
· Install entertainment casework for den
· Paint entertainment casework for den
· Design window seat/bookshelves/curio casework for playroom
· Build window seat/bookshelves/curio casework for playroom
· Install window seat/bookshelves/curio casework for playroom
· Paint window seat/bookshelves/curio casework for playroom

These are just the projects that WILL be done before we can move in. We are also thinking of redesigning and enlarging the master bathroom to include a large double shower. That won’t happen for a while though if we don’t sell our existing house. Plus, once the weather cools down, I’ll be tackling the landscaping and trying to give the house a bit more curb appeal. Like I said… I have my work cut out for me.

Default New House check list

Throne-Check
AC-check
cable TV - check
Ice box- check
bed- check

Good to go.

BTW regarding the renovation, remember your wife's feelings and never forget to tell her what a good job she is doing-you can always go behind her and point out (with love) the things she screwed up.

LOL... Mrs Parallel isn't dumb. She figured out a long time ago that if she fails miserably at painting and such I won't allow her to do it much less make her do it. I swear she does it on purpose... no one could be that bad at painting.

It's the oposite for my bride and I. She knows that I will screw around when painting and it doesn't look good. Sooo, she does all the painting.

Removal and reinstallation of flooring = $5,000

Painting the entire house interior = $3,000

Designing and installing entertainment center = $4,000

Designing and installing window seat/bookshelves/curio = $2,000

Spending the day on the S&W forum, waiting for inspiration = priceless.

I just went through a similar effort. I built a new house and moved into it and then worked on painting and fixing up the old house. Sand and paint all the trim, doors, crown molding etc, paint all the walls, install new kitchen countertop, etc. I ended up going to the local decorating place and asked for a recommendation for a painter and ended up hiring a crew of mexicans. They worked a lot faster then me, did a great job and the cost was outrageously low. I put the house on the market and had three offers in less than a week. Now I get to work on the new house, landscaping, decorating and need to build a deck out back. I feel for you.

Unfortunately I won't have time to shoot for the next month or so.

After day one the carpet and padding is out and hauled away and the ceramic tile demo is about a quarter of the way complete. Some of the carpet tack strips were a royal pain to bring up as some genius decided that gluing them down as well as the using the fasteners that go into the concrete would be a good idea.

I couldn't get one of those Hilti tools today, so all of the tile that was taken out today was done by hand. Here are a few pictures that were taken just before we decided to clean up and call it a day.

Now's probably not the best time to ask, but what was wrong with the ceramic tile?

I had some of that tile in the kitchen of our house in OH. With that particular tile we had and the finish thereon, when the tile was wet and you were barefoot, it was like ice skating. No, worse. At least I can ice skate without falling down. That kitchen was a freekin' safety hazard, plumb simple.

We moved before I could execute the plan requiring application of a sledgehammer to the tile . . .

The tile that was brought up by hand was done so easily because the tile wasn't set properly to begin with. Whoever set the tile didn't bother to clean the floor first, so there was drywall mud and paint overspray between the thin set and the concrete, which of course means that the thin set didn't adhere as it should. Also, I could tell that whoever set it didn't use the proper trowel and therefore didn't use enough thin set because some of the tiles sounded hollow when tapped on.

BarbC jinxed me! I bought a pneumatic floor chisel (4" blade) and it works fairly well. Even so, the tile has been kicking our *** the last day or so. That combined with other pressing matters has us still not quite finished with the demo. It should be complete tomorrow morning, I'll post more pictures then.

Now that's imaginative. And I thought he was merely going on some secret CIA assignment.

Blink... that is about all of the "spare time" that I have.

Well, this is what it looked like as of Sunday morning. However, it hasn't changed much since then as I have been busy with an unexpected project that my company picked up (I have to take all of the work that I can get to pay for all of this). Plus, we have been busy taking care of some punch list items and looking into replacing the roof (even though there is nothing wrong with the current roof) on the house we have for sale. By tonight I may be able to post an edit that reads "Sold Pending Funds" on my House for sale thread in the classified section of several forums.
