That is quite a list of guns.
A Couple kind of standout.
Like the MP-38. Where did you use that? How many did you have and where did you get them?
And also, Where did you use the M3A-1?

Probably 44-40, unless it was one of the large frame Colt Lightning Pump rifles that were chambered for those weird cartgrides for the Winchester Model 76. Even the 44-40s are VERY pricy nowadays.

DANG, this is an OLD, good thread!

I commandeered a confiscated Colt AR-15 for the trunk back around '83 or so. Then I picked up a very early CAR-15 which I kept until I retired. Sold it because I didn't think I'd have any need for it in the future.

Yeah, right.

Well, I'm a young'un here, and don't have a lot to contribute to an "old guys" thread, but I'll show what I've got now.

My 16 inch 870 stays between the front seats, with this long gun in the trunk. The other two stay on my person.

I know the light and red dot sight aren't "old guy" tech, but they are worth their weight in gold, when I'm working. The other guys in my agency, for the most part, will be going to the range in a few weeks wito qualify with the best technology the 1960s have to offer, with iron-sighted M16A1s. I'm not complaining, because it's a long step up from nothing at all, and it's the best they are going to get. I was willing (and able) to provide my own, so this is what I work with.

Wow, this is an old thread, but I just saw it in the Lounge and thought I'd respond...When I entered on duty with the US Border Patrol in 1982 the official rifle to be carried on patrol was the Remington Model 760 pump in .308 Winchester. It had no special treatment and was no different than any seen being carried by a hunter after deer.

Somewhere around here I have a service-wide inventory list, by make, model, and quantity, of all the INS/Border Patrol firearms as of 1974 or so.

Sometime around 1980 or so I heard that the bean counters had bought a bunch of Mossberg .308 rifles for the Patrol in lieu of the requested Remington 760s, to save a couple of bucks. The word was that they were JIB (junk in the box) and so bad they were never issued. The only one of the type I ever saw made Japanese Arisakas look good.

A true but humorous story:
In the late 1980 I went to a small rural county Sheriffs Department as a Patrol Deputy. I was issued a S&W Model 19, a Colt Model 1911A1, A Remington Model 870 (14" barrel) and a Marlin Model 336 .30/30.
Going to the firing range for qualifications:
On firing--
1.S&W Model 19,the rear sight adjustment screw broke off and the elevation went all the way up.
2. Colt Model 1911A1, went full auto
3. Remington Model 870 12 gauge- stock split at the pistol grip
4. Marlin Model 336- rear sight fell off

Returning to the office, I returned the issue "Firearms" and received permission to use my personal firearms.

Not an LEO but enjoyed the thread as we don't know what you fellas are carrying in the trunk.
I'm curious though, have any of you had any guns stolen as it seems easy enough for a crook to pop the latch on a trunk unless cruisers have better locks on them? I know it'd take some balls to break into one but have seen cars left unattended and always wondered if they get broke into.

Last Agency:
Each Patrol Car- Mossberg Model 590-1 12 gauge Shotguns with speed feed stock, magazine extension, and rifle sights. Ammo #4 Buckshot and Slugs.
Colt M-16 .223 Selective Fire Rifle.
In armory were Springfield M-14 7.62 Selective Fire Rifles, MP-5 .40 SMGs, and Savage BA .308 Rifles with Scopes.

Jimmy, Funny you mentioned the MP 38,..... my agency in the early 80's had a confiscated MP 40 which was assigned to the Capt. of the Narcotics/Organized crime unit for raids if he chose to carry it. Of course, when we came out of the Stone Age, MP 5's were the issued weapons.

Yes, Patrol Vehicles are broken into and weapons stolen occasionally. Officers' homes are also broken into and firearms and other items stolen. Some BGs are very bold.

Jimmy, the dept. I served on in the late 60's had a large number of WW11 and Korean War vets who had a bucket load of combat bring backs including German MP38's MP 40's as well as Thompsons ,Grease Guns, M2 Carbines as well as a Sten or 2. When the anti-war and racial riots broke out in our town, the opposition had no clue what we were armed with. In a number of cases large groups were broken up when an old grizzled Sgt. would fire a full auto burst up in the air. That would never happen today ,but in 1969 none of us got into trouble, Our LT. carried an M2 Carbine and was "the meanest *** on the street" Truly ,"the past is another country and they did things differently there".

In the early 70's, I had a regular partner for about 3 years working night shift and he carried a Remington 870 12 and I carried an M-1 carbine that I purchased from the NRA in 1964. Our sidearms consisted of a Colt commander 38 super that he carried and I carried S&W 19 and , just in case, we both carried j frame backups. We were both in our early 20's and thought we could leap tall buildings in a single bound. We were young and bullet proof, or so we thought.
