Is my log sufficient for bear protection?
Here's a twist on the endless bear/zombie threads:
Ex-Marine Kills 300-Pound Bear With Log - ABC News
Ex-Marine Kills 300-Pound Bear With Log
The Incident Is the Latest in a String of Bear Attacks
June 22, 2007
Chris Everhart just had a Father's Day he'll never forget.
(ABC News)
The ex-Marine saved the lives of his three young sons when a 300-pound bear attacked their Georgia campsite last weekend.
While cleaning up after dinner, the family came face to face with the large animal.
"From out of nowhere we heard this loud crash," Everhart said on "Good Morning America." "For a second, I didn't know what it was, but I realized it was a bear. I went to the back of the Jeep to get my pots and pans to scare the bear off."
At the same time, Everhart's 6-year-old son, Logan, tried to frighten the animal. Instead of running away, the bear turned on the boy. Logan's brother, Kyle, tried to help him.
"I threw about five rocks at the bear to keep him away," Kyle Everhart said.
Realizing his sons could be killed, Everhart grabbed a log and threw it at the bear's head, striking and killing him.
"I forgot all about pots and pans and picked up whatever I could to try to distract, fend off, do what I could to get this bear away," Everhart said.
Latest in a String of Bear Attacks
The Georgia campsite incident is the latest in a string of bear attacks. One week ago in Utah's American Fork Canyon, 11-year-old Sam Ives died after a black bear dragged him from his tent and fatally mauled him.
The same bear ripped through another couple's tent hours before the attack. It was later killed and airlifted out of the park.
In upstate New York Monday, a black bear was caught strolling in and out of yards in a small residential neighborhood.
Jim Karpowitz of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources believes the abundance of bear sightings may be due to recent droughts.
"When it's hot and dry like this bears are short on food and they go looking for food and sometimes they create problems," he said.
For Everhart, the 300-pound bear that attacked his sons was almost a problem too big to handle.
"This one got a little too aggressive for me," he said. "If the bear had gotten near my kids, I would have just jumped on it. Knowing me, that's what I would have done, anything to make sure my kids were safe."

The press never gets anything right! I am told there's no such thing as an ex-Marine.

Did the article mention the caliber of the log? I wonder if it was a hollow log or if it was covered with bark, or maybe a little of both. I wish we had clarification.

It is rumored that the Marine said, "as I walk through the valley of death I will fear no evil as I am the meanest SOB in the valley".

Good for the Marine, he truly lucky the log hit it's mark.
If it were me, I would have thrown a .44 Cal 300 gr. log from my 629.

I'm curious where in GA. Whenever I'm out camping I've always got a gun on me and one more in my pack as well as spare magazines.
2 friends and I hiked a SMALL portion of the Appalachian Trail and while we did come across some bear scat we never saw anything larger than a squirrel.

When I was a kid, bears used to eat garbage then too, so it isn't really a new thing that bears come near humans. It was when they'd defecate in your yard that it made quite the mess and was often considered the real annoyance in year's past. Well that and they'd sometimes eat pets. I suppose that fewer people wait near the trash cans with a .30-06 these days (bear is good eating) so more wander around and eventually attack people.

I don't think it did mention it, but I am pretty sure it wasn't a .22 log because we all know that wouldn't work!

I wonder how many grains the log was. Velocity couldn't have been more than 50 or 60 feet per second.
Kinda supports the "large heavy projectile moving at moderate speeds" theory.

Can anyone recommend a good concealed carry method for a log?
Do I need a permit?
Will other states recognize the permit?
What states allow log carry?
Do they have to be registered?
Are any classes available on log throwing?

Well, now I was told that a dishonorable discharge makes you an ex-Marine.
But I only learned about the differences between ex-Marines and retired Marines recently. Actually from a gun dealer, who is also a retired Marine.

It wasn't really a log, it was a large caliber dowel pushed veeeeeeery slowly through the animal!

Did the Marine rely on only one log, or did he carry extra logs?
How big is a log speed loader?

I thought all Marine boots had to wrestle a bare, bear-handed, and then do 50 pushups to graduate.
Maybe it was wrestle a bar, bare.
I can't remember, but they used to tell me somethin' like that. We didn't listen to Marines real close......
Disclaimer- Don't get all wadded up. I served with some Marines long ago and far away, and have the utmost respect for the Corps. Jarheads are just fun to kid.

Sounds like a 'Deliverance' story in there somewhere.
I can't wait to hear the rest.

Something is a bit odd there, I think......
