Default Shooting the 44 Mag-Shooting High

I've been shooting a variety of guns for many years and generally do pretty well with handguns. I have owned several M29's, Ruger Redhawk, Ruger Super Blackhawk, etc, and my current 44 is a 629 Classic with 5" barrel. I even carried a 6" 29 for a while back in the 70's when Dirty Harry was big and qualified on PPC with it. But I have always tended to shoot high with these 44's when shooting full house loads. I dont do this with any other handgun including my N frame 357's. Is this a common experience for ya'll?

It is for me. How high? They are target-sighted guns so I expect them to shoot dead-center with a 6-o'clock hold (if that makes any sense ) - generally around 2.5" high at 25-yards.

I have had a couple long-barreled 29s over the years that shot so high I could not use them, and it is common for me with the 4-inchers. Overall, I have always had the best luck with 6.5-inch guns. Can't speak for the more modern models as I have limited experience with them.

My experience is that if you want a 29 to print right on top of the front sight, you had better be planning on installing the lowest rear blade (.126 height), and maybe pinning in a taller front sight.

Somewhat common. Heavy bullets at lower velocities sometimes shoot high with some guns/shooters combinations. Longer barrel time is the 'culprit'.

Lighter (and faster) bullets will help and sometimes a 'death grip' hold will too. Shorter barrel time will often translate into lower impacts and so will less barrel movement before the bullet exits the barrel.

However, if you can shoot a CONSISTANT group, maybe a sight adjustment or even a sight change is in order.

Good luck.
