Default Opinions on AR 10s (308)

Am considering selling my M-14 (very early heavy match built by Glenn Nelson) and getting a 308 built on the AR style frame. Looks like I would want the shell deflector, flat top, forward assist. Other than that - would like thoughts on Mfg., twist, bbl length, weight, other things to consider. Uses would be general 100-300 yard shooting, possible hunting, and whatever. Any one use the EniDine or other buffers.
Thanks in advance. T

Cool

Tom , I have a DPMS Panther LR-308 , heavy stainless barrel , Timney trigger. Great sub-1in rifle , yet I am a diehard M-14 fan. I have a very accurate , scoped Springfield M-1A in an M-14E2 pistol grip stock.

Both are accurate. Yes , the LR is more accurate after getting hot. If forced to chose , the big AR would go first. Well built M-1As , with genuine USGI parts , are getting scarce and expensive. The M-1A is just so much cooler , nostalgic , yada , yada , yada! If ya can swing it , keep the real rifle and get a plastic & aluminum wonder weapon when finances allow.

I have a DPMS LR308T, with a chrome bolt, cryo'd barrel, Miculek comp., and JP adjustable gas block and adjustable trigger. I have an Eotech sight. I have other long range 308's so a scope, was not needed. It has been awhile since mine was out, but I do not think it has forward assist. If you want to hunt with it, get a five round magazine. I could sell my 5.56's, the 308 is that much nicer to shoot. Now if the ammo would just come down in price. I use 168gr match. For a 300 yard gun I would get a longer barrel. Definitely you will want a scope, although iron sights would work if you have the patience to learn them. At 100 yard out a red dot will cover the target. I also have a Remington Tactical Target 308, with a Leupold Mark IV scope, this is a long barrel heavy bolt gun that is good at 300 yards out. My AR is more of a brush gun. http://www.remington.com/products/fi...cal_target.asp

I have an Armalite AR10A4 and an Springfield Armory IDF sniper.

I perfer the M1A as it is a touch more accurate, but, Armalite is going coming out with a match AR10 soon so I will probably upgrade mine and it may become my fovorite 308 brass chucker.

I am not sure I would be that concerned about a forward assist on the 308 AR, for the type of shooting you will be doing it probably would just be there for looks.

Presently Armalite is not selling parts or uppers alone for their match AR10, but that is supposed to change in the future.

If you have an m-14 match, you have alot more gun than an ar-10. Keep the better one--- the one you have!

Keep your M14/M1A and buy an AR-10. I have 2 AR-10's and like them both, but, not better than my M1A's.

I have an M1A, I like it. I also have an AR-10T that I put a Jard trigger in and had the barrel cut back to 18" and threaded for a suppressor; I like it as well.
