I sent one to the closest regional service center ( Warranty Locations - Smith & Wesson) and it was back fixed in 4 days. They paid the shipping both ways.
If your serial number starts with 3 letters, it has a lifetime warranty.

Sent my sigma 9VE back for a broken extractor. They paid shipping/insurance both ways. Total time gone was about a week. Very satisfied with the service.

I have sent several to Springfield, always excellent service and a good price. I have on occasion gotten more than I asked for and at the original price.
You also get a nice box when it comes back. (It's just cardboard, not blue, but a great place to store a gun.)

I have a 642 that was not striking the primer hard enough, causing misfires. I took it back to the dealer who sent back and S&W repaired it at no charge and paid all shipping. I was very satisfied with their service.

Bought a used nib 1006 9 years ago, found the barrel was defective. Dealer sent it in and walla, new barrel in a few days, or was it weeks?
Anyhow wasn't unreasonably long.

It went very well, instead of repair they sent me a refund check for a Model 337PD that was spitting lead that had to be removed from my face by a doctor at the hospital. I think they were afraid I was going to sue but I assured them I wasn't and all that I wanted was a PD of some model that didn't spit lead. So I bought a 340PD with the refund money that's been shooting just fine now for many years.

I sent a new 627 back for a frame problem. They paid shipping both ways and I got it back in about a week or week and a half. I was very happy with their response.

They are not only good about firearms repairs, they are good about everything they sell. I had a M79 pellet gun that I used in the back yard that developed problems. Sent it off to them for repairs. Not only did they do the repairs, they replaced the barrel and valve with what they called "match" components. It used a lot more co2 then but it sure was a lot more accurate. They sent it back in a new factory box - all at no charge.

I had a timing issue on my 686. They paid shipping both ways. Got it back within a couple weeks. Problem was solved. I was very satisfied with their service. I'd have to say it was one of the best experiences I've had with a customer service dept. One more reason why I prefer S&W. I will add that my experience with Taurus customer service is the worst experience I've ever had with anything I've ever bought...period.

sure about lifetime warranty?
I have a model 29 with a slight lock-up issue. Emailed S&W about it and their response was that it was not covered.
Does anybody know where to find proof of that lifetime warranty?

The lifetime warranty didn't start until the mid or late '80's. Sometime fater the British Company sold it.

I've only sent in two guns in the last year or so. One was a tired M19-5 which they straightened out nicely in minimum time, and a new M&P 10 for a new barrel. That one was in while the vacation break was on, so slower to get back.
But the prospect of pretty good, fast service was why I went with the M&P in the first place.
Many years ago I sent them a J frame that I put too many +P+ rounds through for a rebuild, and that was a good experience as well.

I bought one of the new S&W Walther PPK's. It was involved in a recall and the only thing I found inconvenient was that I had to drop it off at the UPS center and pick it up there when it came back promptly within a couple weeks. I can't even remember what it was over, the pistol functioned just fine, always has. My only complaint was that the grip frame is not continous like it used to be, there is an open area in the rear of the frame where the hammer spring is located.

Excellent experiences. Every one. Called them several times for parts, sent guns back, whatever - always first rate, fast, and friendly.
Have no fear! You'll be perfectly happy.

I bought this 686P Mountain Gun used:
After a while, I discovered it had "push off", the hammer could be pushed off from the cocked position to the uncocked position without having pulled the trigger.
I called S&W and made no attempt to claim original ownership and they emailed me an FedEx label to send it in to Massachusetts. When I called three weeks later to check on its repair status I was told, "It's over in Warranty". I got it back about a week later, no charge at all. I enjoyed the gun for ten or eleven years and gained immense respect for S&W in the process.
