Default Pesky Party Crasher

Our neighbor had a get-together last night with lots of food and people, including kids. He likes to put a bit of corn out for the deer at the edge of the backyard where the woods meet, and of course the usual neighborhood gang of Dodi, NotDodi, and their four fawns came over, to the oohs and ahhs of the out-of-state crowd.

But after the deer left, and even though several adults were playing horseshoes right in the backyard, there on the remnants of the corn was the neighborhood's 2-year old black bear. Everyone came running over to see the bear, who is very used to people and wouldn't move off.

So our friend hollered at him and threw rocks at him, and ran him off into the woods.

Not an hour later, the 2-year old was back. This time, our friend put .38 snake shot into his revolver and from about 100 feet away, popped him once on the flank. The bear didn't holler or anything, but ran away, not to be seen for the rest of the night.

I don't think the tiny pellets even penetrated the fur, but between that and the gunshot noise, Young Mr. Bear got the message.

Our friend also got the message: Don't put so much deer food out that the bears will come for the leftovers.

Oh - and don't put your garbage out the night before. This is Mr. Bear's mama:

Two questions for you Barb:

  • How much is an out of state big game license?
  • How do like baked bear.
I'm kidding!!!

However, if these bears are already used to people, they are headed for big trouble in the future.

Bears + urban population = volatile mixture.

Oh yeah, I fondly remember those terrible twos, never wanting to listen.

So you know what Young Mr. Bear's message was??

Barb's not home - go over to her house and rip up all the tomato plants and smash the tomatoes on the deck! And mud everywhere! And he broke the wind chime!

Red face Quickly thinking: *how to get out of this one!?!*

Um Barb...

If I was there, I'd help y'all clean up the deck.

I'd suggest calling the Department of Game and Fish.
In all seriousness, I think that if it got on the deck and tore down your tomato plants next to the house, the G&F might consider that a "dangerous" bear.

If it smells something cooking in someone's house, and decides to help himself...it won't end well for the poor little teddy bear.

Actually Lee, I picked up a new set of glasses Friday.
Time for a trip back and have a talk with that optometrist.

I hate to say it, but unless you can do some quick aversion therapy on Mr Young Bear such as bean bag shots or a Karelain bear dog, he will eventually have to be put down.

It sounds as though he has found an easy food supply, and is not very afraid of humans. That is a very bad combination.

You need to get F&G involved sooner rather than later.

bob

ETA: And your neighbor needs a slap up alongside the head for starting this. Or at least a lecture on the habits of bears and what happens when they beome a problem.

Barb;
Turn him loose in the home owners meeting, perhaps run him for President. Maybe take him to a board meeting.
Roger.

Roger, that might work!

I think the bear figured out:

#1 - We gave the snake shot to the neighbor and

#2 - At the party, I said to Tony, "Go get the snake shot and shoot him in the butt!"

I think we'll have to name him Yogi because he's smarter than the average bear, Boo Boo.

Hope it works out better for your neighbor than it did for Donna.

From the article: A good friend lives near her, and a bear broke into their house last year and ate all the groceries that they had just brought home. (It especially liked the canned salmon. Yep: it knew there was something it wanted inside cans. Tearing the cans open was a cinch for the huge animal.)

Near here, a woman had left a bag of peanuts in her car. The bear opened the car door and trashed the interior to get the peanuts. When she called the animal control, she asked if she should have locked her vehicle and was told, "No, he would've just ripped your car door off."

Barb;
Somewhere on the internet there is a video of a bear or bears opening car doors. They stand up, grab the top of the door, and peel it down about half way. They also get into car trunks about the same way. The films are of Black Bears, Grisly Bears I think eat the car and contents.
