.38 Special Semi-Auto??
I'm reading "Midnight", by Dean Koontz. In the book, one guy has "a .38 pistol and a .45 revolver." He gives ammo for the .38 to an FBI agent for his Chief's Special. Yeah, I know it's fiction. Heck, it's about an uber-geek who inject the people of a small California town with microchips, turning them into human computers. I was just wondering if there had ever been a semi-auto pistol that used the .38 Special cartridge?

There was a .357 1911 style semi auto made in Mn a few years ago. I don't know if 38 Specials would work in it. I heard earlier this year that Dan Coonan and others were going to start making the pistol again.

Yep, several pistols have been in production that handle the 38 spec MID-Range wad cutter, S&W M52 series, Colts NM Gold Cup, and the Coonan 357. The Coonan will handle the full size 38sp as in SWC, and HPs with a spring change Several makers modified the 38 super, Jim Clark ect. I've got em all and lean to the Clark gun and then the M52. The coonan is a real neat shooter, FULL power 357 and then some!!

If the words in quotes are an exact single quote, they might hint otherwise, but the .38 pistol might have been a revolver. After all, almost all revolvers are pistols.

Dick Cassul, who developed the 454 cassul cartridge, developed and marketed for a time a semi-auto chambered in a very powerful 38 cal cartridege. I believe the cartidge was called, surprisingly, the 38 Cassul. These autos were advertised for some time but I have heard nothing of them for a couple of years.

I've got a .38 Special Giles conversion of a .38 Super Colt M1911. It's frighteningly accurate, but not something I'd want to use for self defense. Of course I wouldn't shoot my 3" Model 65 in a bullseye 2700 match either.

Gotta get off of the kool-aid.
How about a glass of Dickel instead with me if you're ever down this way?

Well, The Desert Eagle was chambered in .357. No reason it wouldn't shoot .38 Special. Right?

38 sp auto
The S&W model 52 was a target gun, like others have said, that shot wad cutters only. It was a very accurate gun and popular among bullseye shooters.
