Who played HS football 50's/60's?
Just an observation and query. This time of year I get flashbacks of grueling summer workouts and grass and dirt being stuffed into my faceguard as we prepared for fall football. Seems to me everyone was involved in some way.
If you weren't playing you had better be in the band/cheerleaders/etc.
Everyone in school was involved in something. In our little town of 11,000 everybody participated. You either contributed or else.
Maybe that's what is missing in todays youth.
Talk amoungst yourselves.
Go Berwick Bulldogs!!!

2-a-days in South Florida in 1962, and being the slowest nose guard on the planet = extra laps AFTER close of practice wind sprints. Don't remind me. . .

Football? Not for me!
I graduated H.S. in 2003, and didn't play football. Wayyyyy undersized to be a full time tackling dummy (5'5" 150 lbs. until summer before senior year).
Instead, I joined the swim team. Co-ed, girls in bathing suits, and all I had to do after practice was take a shower, maybe use some swim-ear.
Dad didn't understand until he came to the first meet. Then he wondered why he didn't swim in H.S.!
A lot of fun, and since then I've grown up and filled out and tried my hand(s) at boxing, MMA, and wrestling. I keep coming back to swimming. As a FL boy, that time I spent in the pool is priceless.
The memories on away trips aren't too bad either. Gotta love coaches who put 3 seniors in a hotel room with 1 freshman. Guess who was on phone duty while we went out looking for trouble. Heh heh heh

We on the varsity in the mid 60s were lucky enuff to go to a "camp" more like boot camp. The games were a picnic after that culling out experience.

Two a day practices, salt tablets, minimal water, and the two man sled. Two on one blocking drill for the linemen. Getting use to the mouth guards the rubbery taste. Playing on both offence and defense lines (right offensive tackle and left defensive end on a five man line).
Two teammates would die in Vietnam and another teammate would go on to the NFL and earn a Super Bowl ring.

PLW45 brings up an interesting point regarding high school sports.
"Wayyyyy undersized to be a full time tackling dummy (5'5" 150 lbs. until summer before senior year)."
From the mid 60's, you know the days when they withheld water as a punishment or incentive:
Some of the high school coaches were shall we say sadistic or something.
Blocking drills, line up on opposite side of a board on the ground. Round robin one against one. The opposing blockers were not allowed to quit until blood was drawn or one quit. OK to this point, but often very disparate difference in sizes, say one a first string offensive/defensive lineman at 6'-5"/280# and the other a 5'-6"/145# (generous) 2nd string something position.
Nothing to be gained for either, but a screaming, slobbering coach working out some kind of an personal issue?????
I could see the two going at it on an open field, experience for both in a game type situation, both learning something both having a chance to use what skills they have, etc., but going at it in an enviroment such as over a board?????
BTW I was the oversized one. Somehow during a scrimmage this particiular coach received more than one blind side hit when he was screaming during an active play and he was behind the line. Coach person also received a different type of hit when he grabbed a facemask and was doing his screaming/slobbering routine in a players face.
Some ?'coaches'? should not be allowed to be in that control or supervision.

Hi:
Early 50s I had a very important position on the Football Team.
Keeping the bench warm and the water bucket filled.
Jimmy (All Star).

Remember it well. No water, salt tablets, putting on nasty wet from the morning practice shoulder pads with that unforgettable stanky plastic smell. Gassers and a drill where ony guy was in the middle of a circle of 5 players each with a number. The coach would call out a number and that player would come full speed into the one in the middle and you had to meet the charge. If the coach thought the guys on the outside were going light, he would put HIM in the middle. Three on three's...Oh I remember. We had a wild arse crazy SOB from east texas as our coach who when he showed up to take over the team, announced that he was "gonna burn those Marlboros out of our lungs". And you know what? He did.
Remember the movie "The Junction Boys" ???
Stangely enough, I'm glad I did it.
PS walking horse, I wasn't the oversized one, I was the 5'6" 185 pound guard /defensive tackle. (coach called me "stump"-hated that)

Wind sprints in South Texas in August. The unforgettable smell of wet, slimy shoulder pads still sweaty from the morning practice. Spraying Tiger Balm on jock itch. I graduated in 1968 and we still had salt tablet dispensers in the locker rooms.
Yeah, hard to forget.
Just finished reading Grisham's "Bleachers". If you didn't go to High School in a small town in the South, I'm not sure you could understand the book. If you did play football for a small town high school, you probably will meet several of your friends in that book.

Not I. As a senior in HS, I was 6'3" and about 155 lbs. -- not the prototypical build for footballing. Plus my school's coaches were jerks and the program sucked. I probably could have walked on and lettered as a senior, as the team only had 30 players (in a 1600 student school!), but...at that point, I wasn't interested.
I envy you guys your memories. I often wonder how my life, and my outlook on life, might have been altered by participating in a rigorous team sport. Now, I'm armchair QB material, but it's not quite the same.

Played varsity my senior year in 1961. Fullback, at 165#! They listed me at 175, said I weighed that in pads! I was pretty fast though. Got beat up pretty good.
When I went into the service, jump school was a breeze! I was still in shape.

Ah yes, I remember it well! Two years of practice and three minutes of game time, before I realized I was too slow for the little guys, and too small for the big guys. The school was about 2400 students, and a lot of them were studs.
The biggest thing I remember was my senior year; I was working to save money for college, and didn't go out for the team. This was in 1959, and Army had had some success the year before with a "lonesone end" offense. Our coach had the perfect guy for the lonesome end; extremely fast, and pretty good hands. All went well until about the end of the season, and it was discovered that the lonesome end had been signing his own eligibility cards. Every victory was forfeited! Talk about lonely!

When I was in high school...
We had two main "clicques" in our school...
the "druggies" and the "jocks".
Truth is, the jocks were just druggies with sneakers.
I didn't play high school sports...I raced motocross.

Played varsity FB '67 & '68. Great memories like everyone else, salt tablets, two-a-days, windsprints, etc. After practice hitting the A&W for quarts of root beer. Played rt. offensive tackle and middle guard in the 5-3 defense. Went undefeated two years in a row and ranked the #1 Class B team in the state. Lost some team mates and good friends in Vietnam also. Still remember the sweaty girdle pads and high top Riddell shoes with hard spikes.

I played HS football from '58 -'62 that went undefeated my junior and senior year, went to state but lost both years to same team in championship game, went on to play at a small college for two years till I blew out a knee. Like others here, I remember the 2 a days, wet smiley uniforms and pads, laps and wind sprints, single bar face mask, no mouth piece. Started on freshmen team as off tackle, second team sophomore off tackle, junior and senior year played both ways, only missed one game due to injury. After college played flag football in service, yup, I love the game, still do.

all so very accurate...i also recall wondering just how much i would be willing to pay for a big cup of ice water...after practice you would go home, collaspe on the couch before the afternoon practice...when you turned over you could hear the water slosh in your stomach from drinking so much after the morning practice...groannnnnn

65-66-67, my school was Humes High (yes the one Elvis went to).
I was 6'2" and weighed 157lbs. I tried out for DE but didn't have enough behind. Moved me to cornerback and I stayed there all three years.
I probably sweated off 1000lbs on that field in those three years. We had a head coach who was all of 5'5" and was right at 300lbs. He could grab you and lift you off the ground before you could blink. I used to dream at night how I could do something to him to get even for those two a days. Now that I look back I wish I could just have one of those Friday night games back to relive it. Boy am I getting old.

Played H.S football and wrestled in the late 60's. Anybody else wear leather shoulder pads and leather hip pads that you had to buckle up in the front? Got hit so hard by a pulling guard one time that my helmet spun on my head and my nose was sticking out my ear hole.
I thought that the football and wrestling workouts wear tough. I weighed 205 and was 6'4" playing MLB and wrestled heavy weight. Then I went to Nam, still was 6'4" but came back 165 pounds, ouch!
