Default Charter Arms Undercover not too bad

A friend keeps a Charter Arms Undercover in his nightstand drawer. He has never fired it and it looks like it had never been fired ever. He wanted to make sure it worked so asked me to take it to the range. He is not a gun guy. This little .38 shot pretty well. It shot about 4" to the left at 15 yards but put most of the shots into a bit larger than a fist size group. I would say that is good enough for a bad guy across the room. I would trust to to do the job as well as any other 5 shot .38.

I am going to get him out to shoot it himself. He is former military but he has not fired a gun in many years. I think he will enjoy it. I don't think he will turn into a guy though.

Charters, Rossi's and Tauri are for girls...only a Smith can turn you into a guy...

I asked my gun guy to order in a Bulldog 44 special. I picked it up, it was nice and light. I spun the cylinder, pulled the trigger, felt the high quality plastic trigger guard, examined the cylinder pawl and lock up thingy and guessed it would last maybe 5 shots. No thanks.

This one is all steel and locks up better than most revolvers I have owned including S&W's. I would not trade my 642 for one though.

I've had a Charter Arms (Stratford, Conn.) Bull Dog (.44) for years. Maybe my favorite revolver of all time. Great gun. I've shot the .38 and it is a fine handgun, well-made and on target.

Thumbs up

In 1978, I was a young city cop and wanted a small .38 revolver for a BUG/OD gun. I really wanted a Chief's Special or Detective Special. They were in short supply in my area back in those days and pretty expensive for my small salary. I wound up with a new CA Undercover. It was light and pretty accurate for what I needed it for. I carried it in a Bianchi Ankle Glove on duty and a Safariland shoulder holster or a Bianchi Pistol Pocket when off duty. It did the job I needed it to do. It wasn't a S&W or Colt but it was reliable and well made and I was happy with it. I think the quality of the CA revolvers was pretty good back then. AND it didn't have a stupid built in lock...

I think the "original" Charter, way back when, was a whole different animal then the guns of their many reincarnations and the company of today. I 'd buy a Taurus over a Charter today.

I had one of the older Undercovers for a while. Decent gun, reliable and fairly accurate. There was just something about the grip. Never could figure out exactly what. Size? Shape? Stocks? But whatever it was, shooting one box of ammo through that gun would leave a nasty blister in the web of my thumb. Never had that problem with a S&W.
Finally just sold it off.

I've got an Undercoverette, a 6 shot .32 S&W Long. I've never seen another and never even seen parts listed. If the Charter collector market ever takes off, I'm sitting on the holy grail...
