Default How hot does it get in Arizona?

People often ask me how hot it gets in Arizona. Maybe this pic will answer the question better than words:

LMAO!!!
Seriously though I get the "How can you live in Tucson BS all the time. A few facts...I have never seen Tucson with the high in the nation, not even close. When Phoenix is 118 Tucson is usually around 106 and our place, 25 miles north at 3500' is about 98. All over the country I consistently see temps higher than here, Seattle was 102 a few weeks ago and we were 96. It's called "Summer", hot just about everywhere and most places have humidity and bugs that only exacerbate the temperature. I'll take 101 with 12% humidity anytime, besides summer for all intents and purposes is just about over and it starting to get really nice...ahhhhh, you gotta love the high Sonoran desert. (o;

Laugh all you want. I was born and raised in Florida and the hotest place I have ever been is the West End Grand Canyon in NW Arizona. 114 degrees and I was sunburned within 1 hour. I'll take 95 degrees, bugs and 90% humidity any time. I was in a parking garage at midnight in Las Vegas one time when it was still 97 degrees. It felt like I was in a convection oven. Nice place to visit but I can't imagine living in that type of heat.

People say Florida is too hot.
Trivia question:
What is the hottest temperature ever recorded in Tampa, Florida?
Answer:
It has never broken 99 degrees, ever.
Ya gotta love Florida!

Different strokes my friend. But for the record I lived (poor choice of words), in Homestead for 15 months. I am first hand familiar with Florida's heat, humidity and bug population. I'll take the dry heat any day (the hottest I've seen in 3 +years is 104). We don't even get all that warm until late afternoon with our highs typically coming around 5. By then I am in the AC and/or pool with a frosty cold one in hand. Enjoy the remainder of the hurricane season, keep your gas tank at least half full and bail out bags packed. Not that I remember but I was born in Key West, the tales my folks do tell....(o;

Me too so all that heat and humidity stuff here in Florida doesn't bother me. I think we all adapt where we live and don't adapt so well when traveling. At least I don't anyway.

I've been to Phoenix in the summer and that dog would have company on the ice if it were me.

The hottest I've experienced was 115 at a rest stop on I-40 south of Kingman.

Absolutely untrue, if you doubt me check the weather channel. Our humidity is no higher then up north in the summer. We have NO rain, and I mean NO, and NO humidity at all from October 'til June. It's a myth created by people who hate Florida or are looking for reason NOT to move here. The only bugs I ever see are the lovebugs in May and September and they only bug your car.

Having lived in the plains states with 99% humidity and 105 degree weather, and in Northern Arizona (yeah I know high desert in AZ is cheating) with the high temps here, Arizona is better. No bugs and the only humidity we get is during the monsoon season.

Of course, I could pass on the winter in both the plains states and Arizona, but that's what happens when you grow up digging out of South Dakota Blizzards. The picture is of one the milder winters I had when growing up in SD. When that sort of thing happens you dream of summer heat.

The summers in Arizona are the dues we pay for the really great mild winters. Some Easterner once asked me what I do to prepare my car for winter in Arizona. I told him that I pretty much just fill it up with gas...

My litle sister stayed in Tempe for a year or so, her husband is a heavy equipment operator. My wife and I were passing through and we stayed with them for day or two.

Early August. The overnight low temps barely got DOWN to 100 degrees overnight.

She had a nice yard and colorful garden planted. I would get up early and see the robbins pulling earthworms out of the dirt. The birds were using pot holders.

This was bad enough in Norfolk:

I was in Phoenix once in August. I was shocked to see people outside playing tennis. We were insane enough to go horseback riding one day. About halfway through the ride, I thought I was going to faint and fall off the horse. I pointed to the road down below where two utility trucks were parked and I said, "Pick me up there." It was so hot I figured I was safe sitting down there in the middle of nowhere because nobody could muster the energy to attack me. I staggered down to the truck and sat in it to wait. There was a utility worker dozing in the other truck. He just looked over and went back to sleep.

Hot's hot, don't matter. Hottest it ever got here in Lake Havasu City, Az was 126 a few years ago, hottest we have seen it in the last three years of living here was 121.

Didn't seem like a bit over 112 either.

Don't own a black car, know how to drive with pot holdersin my hands, keep water bottles in the freezer to take with us when we go out, stuff like that.

Seriously, once you get over certain temps it's all the same, you just stay inside near the air conditioner or outside in the pool. Funny thing is that when you get out of the pool, it's so dry the water evaporates so fast and you get cold. Even in triple digit temps.

I don't own a lawnmower, don't own a snowblower or a snow shovel, don't know what a palmetto is, and put up with 3 months of high temperatures in return for 9 months of gorgeous temperate weather the rest of the year.

Oh, yeah, the taxes on my 2100 sq ft 3 Br/2 bath home are under $1,000 a year. And, I live 3 miles from a lake that I can boat, fish, jet ski, etc. on. And, virtually no crime.

The only people we are afraid of are Californians and New Yorkers with U-Haul trailers................ LOL.

I remember that before I moved down to Phoenix, a buddy of mine told me that it was a dry heat...I said back, well, so is a branding iron. PHX was never very cold, but in not that far away Globe it gets below zero. And they have snow skiing in Flagstaff. But I will never forget one stretch where we had 6 or 8 straight months without precipitation. As a native of rain slicked Portland, Oregon I almost was pulling for it to rain! I will say this much abut the greater PHX area: if you're outside for more than 10 minutes your morning shower was for not...

Arizona is anything but one uniform climate. People who haven't lived here equate Phoenix or Lake Havasu with Arizona weather, but it is instead a crazy quilt dependent largely on elevation.

If you lived in Flagstaff, you might mistake winter there for the same season in Wisconsin. It never gets to 100 up there, even in the height of summer. There are several other spots in the central and northern parts of the state that could make the same claim.

I live 50 miles from Tucson and just 50 miles north of the international border. At my elevation of 4600 feet, I usually have a handful of 100 degree days a year, and it's that hot only for an hour or two in the late afternoon, and they're characterized by single digit humidity. Actually, it's been a hotter summer than usual, so maybe this year I've had 10 such days. That's a far cry from the Valley of the Sun or a Colorado River community where it might be that hot by 10 in the morning and not dip down back below that before midnight - for months on end.

I get snow 2-3 times a year, the pics below typical of how much at a time (these were from a mid-March storm, one showing my back yard, the other the front). The snow is usually pretty much gone in a day, certainly no snow shovel or blower required.

I'll take my climate right here where I am, thank you.

Speaking of heat and humidity combined, The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, my alma mater, is the only medical school that teaches its students that humans breath IN water rather than breath it OUT.
