Default Litter rant.

Had a great Labor Day weekend! Dove hunting with friends on Friday and nearly got my limit, had a blast! Saturday went to the Oklahoma State/Georgia football game and did some tailgating and watched my OSU Cowboys beat a good SEC team. Sunday went camping out at Lake Murray and had a nice time on a beautiful lake. Everything was green because of all the rain, the water was crystal clear, and it was fairly quiet for a holiday weekend, but there was one problem.....there was litter all over the place! Food wrappers, boxes, dirty diapers, and most of all, beer cans. It was the same when I went to lake Texoma and to Talhequa at the Illinois river, and I ususally brag on Oklahoma, but our white trash people have to be the worst in the nation. There were dumpsters and trash cans everywhere and most of them that I saw were near empty. It's not all poor littering people either. At Lake Texoma I saw an island with dozens of expensive large boats/small yachts and there were so many beer cans on the ground it almost looked like aluminum carpeting. I have been to other states where there lakes and rivers don't have hardly any litter problem, so what's the secret? How do other places keep idiots from trashing out the place?

Shoot the litter bugs!
I was parked next to a car with 3 women in it, No one in driver seat, 3 were eating BK food,,, I was waiting for a friend in Bakery,,, Out flies whole BK bag onto the ground,,, I firmly say "excuse me" Finally get ones attention and I say, "There is a trash can there" As i point at a can 20' away,,,,,, Her responce is "You know that's how people get shot"
I was stunned, I asked if she was threatening my life. She said "NO, but people get killed that way!"
I now am Pissed, I tell her that she can litter in her neighborhood but not at my house, I tell her I am going to call the cops and report her for terroristic threats if she doesnt get out and get the trash right now,,,,,,,
I tell her that I will report the License # to the police, She actually tells me "it aint my car" I tell her I dont care, And have my cell in hand.
About at this time the driver of the car comes out and asks what's going on, I tell her,,, She camly picked up the trash and made her way to the can while I was thanking her.
I would love to have smacked the offending lady bloody,,,, But I am not allowed to do stuff like that.
Little did the Gem of a woman know that I was prepared for what ever she had to offer,,,,,~~~ Except for her rudeness!!!~~~
It's tough when folks just dont care,,,,, Drives me nuts!

Good grief, it didn't happen to be a carload of teenagers, did it? Because we have that uppity teen mentality of "oh yeah well my boyfriend will beat you up" or "you could get shot if you do that around here" or "better watch your back". Yeah, yeah, we've heard it all before. And most of us won't go quietly into the night either, sister.

Well, except those of us who obey the law here in freedomless Illinois. We'll get jumped or attacked and be screwed, AND THEN they'll cite us as an example of why we need more gun control, because reprimanding law abiding citizens will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and gang bangers!

Y'all have nothing on our hillbillies. I just survived another Labor Day fireworks party. I live on the river, so everyone and his half-wit relatives walk or crash land their vehicles nearby. Then they commence to trashing my nice little neighborhood. Technically, the fireworks don't start until 9:05 PM but the worst offenders get here early for maximum litter disbursement.

Some years are worse than others. I no longer clean up the dog droppings from outside my fence, preferring to let the jerks sit in in. But it seems we have a tradition of long standing around here. The instant a bottle or can is empty, they drop it. It really doesn't matter that I live on a corner lot, and there is a huge city supplied (decorative) garbage can across the street. It falls were it falls. Usually on my lawn.

My own procedure is well established, having lived here for the last 32+ years. I wait until everyone leaves, then I make a clean up run up and down the street. Also down my side street. I pick up everything with my little "pickerupper", like they used to have in old groceries or libraries. I fill a bag or two with other peoples litter. Imagine my surprise this morning to find litter all over again. It was the folks still in party mode, walking up the road to find their cars. Everyone seems to leave the party with the one they're drinking, plus a spare (walking 2 blocks to their car my be life endangering without an extra beer for the road.) Yes, the tea-totalers with soft drinks are no better. Once the sweet syrup is gone, the cup or can hits the ground.

I supply the beer for my party. I wish the guests would respect that. Instead they feel the need to "bring something", usually bottled beer. Some glass, some plastic bottles. One common denominator, the metal cap. You know the ones, you can twist them off and drop them in my grass, right where you were sitting, or you can use an opener, then drop the metal things in my grass. It never occurs even to my guests to use a provided trash bag, or the recycling bin a few feet away. Its just easier to drop them. Besides, it gives Dick something to do on Labor Day morning.

Just as bad, they leave the extra's in my cooler, on the ground, on my table in the yard, everywhere. At least those are full. But I'll just give them to some neighborhood drunk. Its just beer that has been hot and cold to me, to them, its liquid gold! And the few I bestow the presents on are admonished to not even consider opening one until out of my eyesight. The punishment for ignoring me is no more free beer, ever. Some of the old homeless types even hobble at an increased pace to get out of sight!

My personal belief is we should be allowed to shoot litterers on sight. It certainly would cut down on the practice. I fear we'd lose most of the current generation of teens and early 20s, but we'd be better off because of it.

A deposit on the cans helps. Some still toss 'em, but quite a few figure it's worth it to pack them home if they're worth 5-10 cents ea. (a little discount on the next 6 pack/half rack, whatever)

Actually, our state if fairly clean of litter. There is a five cent deposit on cans and bottles and "most" people take them back to the store. Main problem with the bag and paper litter, so I have noticed, is with the immigrant Mexicans and teenagers. The former are just ignorant as to litter laws and that is how it is where they come from, the latter are just a bunch of jerks. Just my personal observations.

I will guess that they were 30 thru 50...
They were up from the not so nice area about 10 miles south nearer to CC Phila.

I'm in favor of amending the Constitution so as to make littering a capital offense, punishable immediately, on the spot, by sniper. It is boorish, low-life behavior, demonstrating complete contempt for others and the environment they have to occupy, and doubtless indicative of other, well, "trashy" and criminal behavior, which could be prevented by preemptive punishment for littering.

How about a "License to Litter" ? At say $1,000 per annum. My experience with litterbugs is that they are just plain slobs-ever see their cars or their dwellings? Also, as my mother once said, they are "people who can't spend more than 10 seconds a day thinking about anybody but themselves."

Perennial problem around here. I keep our stretch of road clean, but my blood pressure goes up several notches every time I do the litter sweep--around once every two weeks.

Some swine threw a HUGE bag of trash off the bridge at the corner of our property a few weeks ago. Out of sight to everyone but me since I have a trail that goes under the bridge. I drove the truck down there and picked it up, and looked through it after I got home. Yes, not only were they slobs but they were stupid enough to throw out their mail with the rest of the trash. Lo and behold, the trash was courtesy of one of the neighbors a half mile down the road. It included personal mail--for example, a letter from their bank threatening to yank their debit card if they didn't put some money into the account. It even had their account number on it!

I've called the sheriff a couple times in the past over particularly egregious littering that included mail and they've paid the perpetrators a visit and gotten them to clean it up, but that approach isn't very satisfying to me as I can't tell the slobs what I think of them. This time, on the way to work the next morning I pulled in their driveway, plunked the bag down in front of their garage, and duct-taped several of their pieces of their personal mail to the garage door. I also taped a note to the door that read "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?? THE NEXT TIME YOU THROW YOUR GARBAGE ON YOUR NEIGHBOR'S PROPERTY YOU WILL GET A VISIT FROM THE SHERIFF". I resisted the urge to dump the trash out on the ground, mostly because there were vehicles there and I didn't want a confrontation in case someone saw me. I just wanted them to know that someone knows who they are and utterly disapproves of their behavior.

By the way, it's remarkable how much you can learn about someone on the internet if you have their name and address! Tax records, employment, etc. These particular people have very good jobs, have a very nice house, etc. I suspect their son may be the one that did the deed, and can only hope it was mom or dad that found my little note.

My father told me when I was a kid that "The world is full of slobs". Boy, was he right.

I agree with Cajun. You litter you die. Some loser came in my shop just last week and acted like a jerk about how long it was going to take me to call him with an estimate. When he got back in his car he dumped his ashtray in the parking lot, and threw out 3 cans of Schlitz. I simply went out there, put the trash in a big clear bag and taped it to the handle of his machine. Simple enough. I can't wait for the guy to come in later this week to pick up.

nothing irritates me more than litter. my wife and cousin and I are regular hikers up here in the Bay Area and we always are able to fill a grocery bag or two with the litter we pick up while enjoying nature. What ever happened to leaving a place in a better condition than before you got there? I'm guessing the majority of folks up on these trails are liberal tree huggers, yet they litter as bad as the rednecks you guys talk about in OK.

These little guys are our worst offenders:

The other day, there was a load of trash on our upper acre, which had been dragged out of the neighbor's garage by two rascals such as these. Paper plates, jars of salsa, homework papers... They got to the neighbors' garbage on the other side the week before, and there were diapers in that one.

Trash here has to be locked down in containers so the raccoons, crows and bears don't get into it. The night before garbage pickup is like Mischief Night around here.

Cool

.

Them, I can forgive, they're just trying to survive.

Those human (barely) perpetrators should know better. Bad breeding, and stupid!

Default Litter rant

When I saw the heading I was hesitant to click on it for the following reason, I live in the Illinois River watershed and I use turkey litter on the farm, we have a state approved nutrient plan and I can put 2 tons to the acre once a year. The Ok. attorney general is sueing several poultry companies in Ar. I run cattle and cant aford commerical fertilizer and without the litter I would have to quit the beef business. Jeff

Just got some new downstairs neighbors in my apartment building a couple months ago. With the cool weather, I like to open the windows instead of running the AC. One evening I start smelling smoke - turns out about all they do is sit outside on their porch smoking. So I have to close the windows so my place doesn't stink.

Their patio furniture consists of two lawn chairs and a cooler topped with a giant bowl piled high with cigarette butts. I haven't yet figured out if any of them actually work, but judging by the high the butts are piled I'm guessing no. But they have three cars.

They left for the weekend, but of course didn't clean up their mess. So when the wind is blowing right, the place smells like an ash tray.

When I'm out on my bike, I really notice the McD's wrappers, beer cans, and broken glass everywhere. People apparently have no interest in keeping their neighborhood nice and prefer to treat it as a big trash can.

When I was still on the PD, I was patrolling a rural area by our Community College and found a bunch of trash bags strewn about next to the road. I stopped and checked one of the bags out and got an address from some mail in it. I went back to the station, found a phone number for the address and called the homeowner up and explained what I had found. He was po'd as ever and said his teenage son was supposed to have taken the trash to the dump, but apparently got lazy and decided to throw it along the road instead. He also said he would have a talk with his son, and that the boy would pick up not only their trash, but any other trash in the area. When I checked the next day, area was spotless. I figured it was better to do that than cite him to our worthless Juvenile Court System.

Be glad they're smoking cigarettes and not controlled substances.
There's a Chinese family next door to me and a few doors away is a Hispanic family. In both cases the men have to do their smoking outdoors.

If litter grates on your nerves don't get into rental property. I cleaned out one last month using a snow shovel. In one cabinet there were three very old and very dead mice.
