Default Question - Current production M10 and M64's...

Do either of these models utilize the newer 2-piece barrel design, or are they still the traditional one-peice design?
My dealer isn't sure, and I haven't gotten an answer from S&W yet.

No on the 10.
I believe no on the 64's...
The first model to have a two piece barrel (besides Performance center and certain alloy/Ti/Sc models) was the 65, if memory serves me.

The 620, new 520 and 619 also have the 2pc barrel, but these are on the L-frame.

My 4" 64-8, a K-frame, SKU #162506 (Current number in '09 S&W Catalog.), S/N CJH9XYZ, came with a shot case dated 08-18-05. It has a two piece barrel. BTW, it was bought as a 'used' security guard's gun - but it had never been issued. Super plinker, sadly my 'house' gun now - great with Remi R38S12 +P 158 gr LHPSWCs.

Wow! Now, it gets strange.
I finally got a reply back from S&W, and they said they are currently one-piece.
When I got my 3-inch 64 several years ago, I specified one-piece because I had read that 2-piece barrels were going to be implemented through-out the line. The first they shipped was a 2-piece - it was shipped back and a one-piece was sent to replace it. So, I know 2-piece barrels were on M64's for a time.
This should be interesting.

I think it was here - in the S&W forum - where I read about a letter from S&W re one piece 64 barrels being used again starting in July or so. Check May-June posts. I thought then that they just had a glut of older 4" 64 barrels, but they said it was in response to customer demand. Of course, memory is the second thing to go... I forgot what the first thing was!

PS I couldn't care less - my 64's two piece barrel will outlast me and my future generations.

Yes the new model 64-8 has a two piece barrel. Actually smith and wesson claims that soon all their revolvers will be 2 piece. The model 10 on the other hand is still currently one piece. Isint it interesting though that smith does not tell you this in their catalogue or their web site.

S&W has started going back to a 1 piece barrel on 64s. Your dealer may have to do some work to find the 1 piece barrel guns. Distributors are trying to push the 2 piece barrels out without dropping the price. The model 10s have always had a 1 piece barrel except for a special run for a security company.

It is interesting that Smith sent out a press release talking about the change back. I do not think it is customer demand. Correction departments in CA, FL and GA had problems with M64 2 piece barrels breaking. It could be as easy as the forcing cone cutaway design of the K frame guns.

FYI just picked up a M10 casing dated 9/8/2009 1 piece barrel.

For what it is worth....
Smith & Wesson contacted me and they say that production is now one-piece on both the M10 (always was one-piece) and the M64 (was one-piece, then two-piece, now one-piece, again). I was contacted by Davidson's (seeing how they show 4 M64's in stock) and they say all of theirs are two-piece.
Whoever stated that there are still a lot of two-piece M64's out there being pushed out by the distributors had it right on the money.
I guess I'm going to wait a few months, then test the waters again.
Thanks to everyone that responded and ultimately added to my knowledge of the situation.

Hey try budsgunshop.com they might have the 1 piece barrel as they move inventory very quick. You might also want to try local gun shows. RSR and Valor are both flooded with 2 piece barrels.

The 10 was never changed to two-piece.

The 64s and 67s were changed to two-piece, but I saw a form letter sent out by S&W in the summer indicating that due to "popular demand" or words to that effect, they have gone back to one piece barrels.

Thus, whether you will get one or two piece depends on whether your distributor has sold all of the two piece ones or whether they are still selling their older stock first.

If they can go back to one-piece barrels due to popular demand then they can lose the wretched lock due to popular demand.

Well, HECK!!!!!!!
I just got another email from the same guy at S&W. He corrected himself saying that they are (currently) manufactured with two-piece barrels.
Yet another part of a really mixed up puzzle.
