Default Model 66

I don't know if this is the right place for this or not.
I have a chance to pick up a Model 66 w/ a 3" bbl.
Ser#8K178XX (on the bottom of the butt)
It has Pachmyers on it and he does not have the correct grips for it.
I will show some pics so you guys that know about these things can see what it is.
It has several letter and number markings on it that I have know idea what they mean.
Any idea how old it is?
What grip should it have on it?
Is this a desirable gun to own?
What do the markings on it mean?
Any info would be appreciated tremendously.
Have a look and let me know what you can tell me about this piece.
THANKS!

How much? If its within reason, buy it! If not, send me his contact info . The 3" 66's are pretty hard to find. 66 no dash means it's one of the earlier models; each dash represents a change in the model somehow. yours is pinned and recessed, which is desirable for many collectors. Someone else will have to help with exact age, but my 66-3 was manufactured in the early 80's, I believe.

I believe no dash is 1970-1976. 3 inch makes it a rare gun. Add pinned and recessed and it's a collector I'm sure.

That is an early pinned one. I do not believe that the 3" guns where made during that time period and in fact I do not think that any were pinned barrel. They started with the dash 2's I am pretty sure. I can't tell from the pics for sure but it appear to me that it is a 2.5" 66 and not a 3". Measure it from the face for the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

You are correct.
It is a 2 1/2" bbl.

Still a great gun...go for it if the price is right! That would be 425-500 in my neck of the woods. If the Pachmayr's aren't Copmpac Pro's, try some... they're fantastic grips for these guns. Also Hogue Bantams; wood if you're willing to spend or rubber if you aren't.

Nice snub! In answer to one of your questions about which grips it should have on it - these would have come with checkered magna grips. There are however better ones for it if you intend to shoot and/or carry it alot (Ahrends, Spegel, Eagle for wood, and as mentioned above hogue bantam or pachmyer Compaq). If you want it to be 'as original', you should have no problem finding some Magnas in the Accessories forum here or on ebay or gunbroker. I have a set of magnas for my 19-5, but use Ahrends if it leaves the safe.

Thanks for all the replies.
Where do I look to find out what all the markings/letters/numbers stamped all over this thing mean?
