Default LifeJacket Gun Lock

Hello all--I am strongly considering this locking method. I like it's security and portability. Has anyone had any experience with this product? There are a couple of models: the FJ1(small to Medium Frames) and the FJ2(Large Frames).

Life Jacket Gun Locks (LifeJacket)

I have a Smith and Wesson 15-3. I believe this is considered a "Medium" sized revolver. I am trying to decide which one to get.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Scotty

Never used a gun lock and never will. When my kids were
young I educated them about guns. Told them that you treat
all guns as if they are loaded and you will never get into
trouble. My grandkids come over all the time and I am teaching them about guns also. Just my opinion!! Don

I use this product when I check a handgun while flying. It's minimal in size and TSA approved.

I am sorry, but a locked gun is like a locked fire extinguisher...might as well stock up on rocks.

If it is for traveling purposes, fine, if it is child proofing put it beyond their reach until they are old enough to teach them they dont touch without permission
just my $.02

I completely agree--if it were up to me, I would store it out of the way(unlocked and loaded) until my 3 yr old is old enough for gun education. But until then, a lock will appease my wife.

I think you all are missing my question on this one. Although I respect your opinions, I didn't ask if whether or not you think I should lock up my gun in my house---I asked about a particular product and whether anyone has any experience with it....and ultimately, if my revolver will fit the product.

I understand everyone has different approaches on how to protect and educate their own kids....but thats not what I asked.

Let pretend that I want to purchase the LifeJacket Gun Lock because I am planning to take my revolver on a flight. Will my Model 15 fit in the FJ1 model LifeJacket?

We might have one here at the house, a prize from some pistol match. If I can find it I can check to see if a Model 15 fits well in it. I'll let you know what I find.

Scotty,
Sorry you're not getting the answer you need. But you did mention the word lock and well the "switch" went on for the "no" lock crowd.

I checked on the internet and here's a link for a company that carries the lock. There is a click link on their site for a PDF file that lists what model locks work for which gun models. The LJ1 fits a model 67 which is a stainless model 15.

Hope this helps.
Dave

Scotty I think that our opinions run so strong against locks
that we forgot your question. I am sorry but I don't know
the answer to your question. Don

For transportation they are ok. Keep in mind the barrel and grip are exposed and could be damaged. If enough weight fell on it the edges may act like a cookie cutter and leave a mark.

Now I will say since I obtained my CPL I have not used mine, or been on a plane.

Thanks biglar, Hawkeye, and MKT for your responses. I guess if it fits the 67, it will fit my 15.

Hawkeye--I think your right about the anti-lock opinions here. I guess these folks are so passionate about there Smith and Wessons that they hate to see them locked up. Check back with me in a year and I will probably share the same beliefs.

Scotty,

I looked high and low for the life jacket gun lock. No dice. No telling what I did with it, stashed away or gave away (but we'll keep an eye out for it anyways). Sorry but I'm unable to help out further at this time.

I have one that I used with a semi-auto; I don't recall the size, but the base of the frame and a small part of the barrel/slide extended from the lock (I carried a Glock21 or SA XD .45). I used it exclusively for travel. It's easy to open and close for inspection, and it meets all of the TSA requirements.

Scotty,

At least remind your wife that if the gun is locked in this device, it will be a LOT harder to access in a crisis.

I strongly recommend a 'rapid access' small safe like the Gun Vault line or any one of a number of safes available with push button keyed locks (no batteries).

You can get into one of these in seconds, yet still keep the loaded guns away from little ones.

I have small grandchildren and keep guns in gun vaults in several places in the house with zero problems.

Scotty,
Sometimes you do what you have to do to keep the peace. Been there, and done that, and I'm still married to prove it. FWIW, I compromised with She Who Must Be Obeyed. I bought a 5906 which has a magazine disconnect, and kept it empty (save for one up the spout). Put the mag in an accessible place for us, though not for our young son.
Now please don't think that I'm postulating on what I think you should do, I'm just offering up a great excuse to buy another gun.

I just went to the safe to see what will fit in the LJ1, as this method may be more reliable than manufacturer's claims. I have transported the following with excellent fit: S&W J frames and a 3953, Glock 19 and Colt Cobra. I just tried a square butt model 10 4"HB with no luck due to the target stocks. A model 66 (2.5") is too 'tall' due to the adjustable sight, but the Pachmyr round butt rubbers were OK to fit, so perhaps a M10 with smaller stocks would work. That would rule out a M 15.

I hear ya. It took me some sweet talking to convince her that getting a gun was a good idea--including the promise of a good safe/locking solution. Maybe once she shoots it, it will change her feelings a bit.

+1 on a small gun vault, or even a full-size safe w. an electronic lock. I have one a life jacket which I thought I'd use to lock up my gun in my car -- I ended up using a... Duravault? more -- locking metal box w. padding inside and a cable to loop around things.

The life-jacket is probably more secure -- I'm planning on using one for shot guns to lock up a shotgun and keep it in my office, unless I go ahead an install a small in-wall vault.

The benefit of the lock-box is it's not limited to the gun, as much. I used to just carry my Rohrbaugh, which I could wiggle out of the Life-jacket I bought for my 1911, but the box handled all of them well.
