Question 3rd generation U mark?

I just picked up a 4056TSW, the left side of the trigger gaurd is engraved with the letter U. The box also reads used. I'm assuming S&W did this to refurbished guns? Police guns? Anyone else have input? I posted a link with some pics.

The U was used on refurbs, trades, samples, and such
