New girl, with a new 15-22!
Hi
I am brand new here, and I just got my M&P 15-22 today. I hope you wont mind me getting involved in this discussion. I just had to say something about this though.
Today was my first day at the range with my new 15-22. Before firing it, I broke it down and thoroughly cleaned it with Hoppe's Elite, and then I lubed it with Rem Oil.
As expected, my new 22lr AR functioned very well, and it really is a joy to shoot.
I did not expect my new 15-22 to have no f2fire, f2feed or f2eject issues, with as many rounds as I intended to fire through it before another cleaning. OK I had some minor problems. But it had never been fired before, and it needs breaking in to become as fully reliable as it can be.
Here is how things went.
First I ran two 25 round mags of CCI Stingers through it, all in rapid fire, and I had not one f2fire, f2eject or f2feed, with the Stingers. That was a lot of fun too! Then I ran three 25 round mags of, Winchester 40 grain Super-X Power Point, lead hollow points. Again I had no problems at all.
So far that is 125 rounds, of .22lr, all shot in rapid fire through a brand new, not even close to broken in, rifle, without a single hiccup. That is pretty darned good fellas. Things are looking good for my new M&P 15-22.
Then I tried another 25 round mag of the same Winchester HPs, and after half a 25 round mag, I had few f2fire, cleared em, fired several in rapid fire, and then I started having f2feed issues with a couple of stove pipes f2ejects.
Now I did not start cussin and get mad at all. Nor did I think maybe I got me a lemon, because it is a brand new rifle, not yet broken in, and .22lr is dirty stuff as far as ammo goes. I just wanted to see how many rounds of .22lr I could fire before I began to have performance issues, and I was not at all surprised at the results.
If I had more time today, I would have cleaned my beautiful new rifle right there on the bench, and I bet I would have been able to fire many more rounds before it got too dirty to perform without issues. It is normal, for any 22lr repeater to to act up when dirty, especially when not yet broken in.
Now if I had sheared of the feed ramp, as some have or broken the ejector mechanism, well now then I would have had something to whine about, and yeah I sure would have.
I think S&W has a real winner here. Just my opinion. But I am very impressed with the fit, finish and well thought out bolt and carrier design. Those magazines S&W came up with are superb also. I mean they are head and shoulders above BDMs mags for ciener .22lr semi autos, right down to both the design and material composition, and I am very grateful to S&W for doing that right too.
Just my little old opinion again, but I gotta tell ya that I am one happy lady tonight. Now if I shear the feed ramp or break the ejector, or something else inexcusable happens, well then they will hear about it from me.
All I have to say to the S&W design team, right now, is this.
I am very glad I bought this weapon, and I believe that it will become very reliable upon break in. I love the functional AR platform controls, the easy care polymer main body material, the Thompson Center barrel, and that bolt and carrier assembly is pure genius! So easy to break down and thoroughly clean, with the great AR ergonomic feel, at a very affordable price, the M&P 15-22 is a total knock out. I could just kiss you guys at S&W!

Welcome to the Forum Lynn!!! Glad to have you. Congrads on your 15-22, they are very hard not to love, haha. When you had the minor issues, did you try another mag of the ones you had good luck with, to see if it still did good with them? after the hicups? Mine loves the Federal 550 bulk pack from walmart, cci minimags, and winchester Superx superspeedRN. I had issues with mine right out the box, and had to send it back, had stovepipes, jamming. Since ive got it back ive put 500rds or so, out of that less than 10 jams here and there, but i blame that on how i loaded that particular round in the mag, gotta be real paticular when loading em.

Hi TxShooter
I only brought 50 rounds of stingers, or I sure would have switched. I did that with my Kel-Tec PLR-22 during break in, and the stingers all fired after FED Champions began to fail me.
I did a palm slap on every mag and made sure of alignment visually. I think my baby was just dirty from the Winchester ammo. Good to see you are back in business with your rifle. I have been reading about the snafu with your new rifle. I am glad things have worked out for you.

lol Thanks for the warning. Maybe they deserve it though.
Despite the problems some are having, I think S&W did a very good thing here, and they will work the kinks out. As long as they stand behind their work I just love em.
I do want a decent trigger though. The OEM one is 'adequate' but gritchy and slow, and I had a double tap bump happen too. Glad the BATF wasn't there for that. I hear those boys are mean. I think that Rock River drop in is callin to me.

Another welcome here. Congrats on your new 15-22.
When you have some time, tell us how you really feel about your new rifle.
I don't have any issues with the BDMs, just wish that the new 50 round drum they just came out with worked with the 15-22.
I put the RRA NM 2 stage trigger in mine. Great upgrade. I am thinking of sending the NM trigger out to Bill Springfield for his magic.

lol Thanks for the welcome.
Don't get me wrong now. I really like the BDM mags for ciener. Best available for them IMO. I just really like the M&P 15-22 mags a whole lot more is all.
Thanks for confirming the RRA trigger upgrade for me. I just have to get one now. I think having work done on the original trigger is also a great idea. Always good to have a back up.

Just imagine a halfway decent looking woman, of retirement age, who is over the hill and a tad over weight. There you have it. Trust me pics are not worth it.
My 15-22 is just out of the box, stock and nothing special other than their innate coolness, and you already know what they look like.

Just sent my RRA 2 stage out today to Bill Springfield. Hope to have it back soon. He is known to put a good tune on RRAs and also the OE trigger. Has a reasonable price, and good reputation. I'll find out first hand.

Welcome to the forum...do you have any S&W handguns??
What is everyone seeing for prices on the 15-22? Here in NH Fox Ridge, the TC Custom Shop and store (which is now owned by S&W) is selling them for $399.00...no tax. I have seen prices from $439.00 at a large local shop to $500 at a gun show...

That is about the range in pricing. $400 to 500.00. I saw one poster mention he got one for $369.00 using his LEO discount.

Let me add my welcome to the forum.
No one seemed to ask, so I will, what happend with those FTFs? Did they do what they were supposed to on the second try?
Rimfire does get air bubbles or thin spots in the primer now and again apparantly.
I'm asking cause I've got some that do great in my pistol and are enough to make me want to bend the barrel in my rifle, (or replicate judge Smales). CCi's are working fine Remington T-botls aren't coming to my house again, Federal champions are working well for me so far.

Hi PDL. I re-chambered them, and one fired and the other did not. I tossed that second one.
Unlike all the other casings, both of those showed light FP strikes. All the others had nice deep FP marks. I theorize that the Winchesters I was using, burn a bit dirty, and the F2fire did not fully chamber because of fouling. I think, maybe the fp strike impact energy was taken up, bumping the cartridge the rest of the way into the chamber. Heck I don't know. Just a theory.

Lynn,
Welcome, first of all.
You may want to try some different lube. Rem oil is not the greatest choice in lubes. You may have just dried out when you started to get issues.
For what it's worth, I use Militec-1 in just about all the guns I own.
Enjoy,
Bob

Thank you for the welcome.
I may try Militec-1, one of these days, if I ever see it in any of the gun stores. I have even asked about it in stores around here. No one carries it though.
It's all Rem Oil or S&Ws spray dry lube up here. I was told by every gun store owner for 100 miles, several by the way, that they won't gum up actions in cold weather like the thicker stuff does. So they are all anybody sells up here.

My thanks to rbert0005, for making me look into this more and rethink my previous assumptions, about cleaning and lubing firearms. Now, after doing a bit of research and reading, I have decided to do the following.
I am going to order both of these one step clean lube and protect products, in bulk, from their web pages. Both come highly recommended, by people who know, a heck of a lot more than I do.
Gunzilla was developed to reduce weapon malfunctions for our military and law enforcement.
Similar to the above product, Ballistol cleans, lubes & protects, just about anything.

I fired 25 rounds of CCI Stingers tonight, rapid fire, and it was a flawless performance.
Then 25 rounds rapid fire, round nose plain lead, CCI Blazers, and I had two failures to feed. No biggie. Boy o boy, those bullets are funny lookin, ya?
Then 75 more rounds of Stingers, rapid fire, and that was another perfect performance.
Looks like my rifle is OK. I sure love this weapon let me tell ya.

I have been using Wipe Out / Patch Out also. I use it on all my guns and it works great. It's a foam.
More info on it at wipe-out
MidwayUSA stocks it.

I have been using Hoppe's Elite. It cleans super thorough. I have also been using Rem Oil. I don't think, all by itself, Rem Oil is adequate for some semi auto actions though.
I am going to add Ballistol to my gun care regimen, because of it's versatility and the protective lubricating film it leaves.
I will likely add M-Pro 7 LCP to my list also. It is a tad cheaper than Hoppe's Elie, even though it is the same thing, made by the same company.

Lynn, try not to over-think the lubrication issue, you can save a lot of money by just using a quality synthetic motor oil.
I've been using Redline 20-50 in both my AR15s, the 15-22, both my 1911 .45s and my H&K P7 (and in my 1987 BMW) without any problems or abnormal signs of wear. I also use a white lithium grease on the areas that slide and that take the most abuse, as an added line of protection. The combination has served me well so far......and a quart of motor oil lasts a lot longer than the usual small bottle of specialty oil.
Many on the M4 & 1911 forums use motor oil, but you'll always find those hard-core types the insist on some specialty oil. The way I see it is that if the oil will handle the effects from a running engine it will handle the effects of a gun.

Much truth there... and it applies to a lot of things beyond lubricants and firearms.
But.... hobbies are the home of over-thinking the simple, over-doing the done, and fixing what ain't broken. Absent these virtues things can get boring

You make some good points there. I have long considered using a motor oil of some kind. I have read about, how many of you guys are using it, with no ill effects. I just might start using motor oil regularly. I know I sure would in pinch. That much is sure.
I am leaning toward Ballistol right now, because it is not expensive, since you use so little of it, and it has just heaps of household and around the garage uses. I really like the whole idea of a one step CLP as well. The other thing is, it is plant based, and wildlife, like deer, have even been observed licking at places where Ballistol has been spilled, also to no ill effect by the way. I bet they can sure smell motor a ways off, and I bet they don't like it. I do realize I may be wrong about that part. Just my thoughts on it, for now. For whatever it is worth.
I really appreciate you, advising me not to over think the issue, because I do have tendency to do that. So thank you, sincerely, for sharing your thoughts with on this subject Gunzilla.

No problem Lynn, sharing info is what this forum is all about. I've learned how to load my 15-22 magazines from a couple of helpful members here!!
BTW, on the Rem-oil....it's great for squeeky hinges but I wouldn't put it on my guns. .....
My last thought when I buy gun oil is: "can a deer smell it?" I'm not a hunter so my only concern is does it keep the moving parts wet and slippery.

Yeppers! This is place is great. I know I have sure learned a lot here.
Yeah, I agree, you guys definitely got me rethinking my reliance on Rem Oil. Now, I would not hunt deer with a 22, but I know rats and gophers and such can sniff stuff real well too.

Lately I've almost done my deer hunting with my car. The vermin are everywhere.

At least you haven't been touched by ammo shortage.

The only thing worse than the shortage is the included increase in price.

Ouch. That can really cost in auto repair bills. We haven't seen a single deer around here. Now, before hunting season, they were all over the place. Maybe we have some exceptionally smart deer in these parts.
Be careful now Joni_Lynn.

I live in a small town and there's often deer in my yard when I walk the dog in the early morning or late evening.
