Default Who has a Model 40-1?

When S&W came out with the Model 40-1 Centennial with the girp safety and chambered it in .38 +P, it was the talk of the forum. The big news was that it did not have an internal lock. It seemed like they were selling like crazy. I really like mine. I have big hands and the polished Tyler T-Grip makes the little J-Frame fit me perfectly. I never fail to compress the grip safety and I love the nickel finish with the gorgeous factory wood grips.

So who else has one of these new Model 40-1's? Blue, nickel, or case harded finish? Let's see 'em!

I've posted this before, nice revolver with a well executed finish. I did not care for the plastic stocks with the vaccum plated plastic medallions that came on the piece. I replaced them with a set of modified Herrett's.

I now use a 640-1....

Wow, perhaps S&W will be discontinuing them. Looks like me and 9303 are the only two people who bought them. The nickel finish on mine is superb and the writing is all cut deeply into the metal instead of just etched. The gun shoots great, has plenty of style for my taste, and is sans the infernal IL....

Maybe mine will be a collectible one day since it seems no one bought them during the past two years.

I had one just like the original poster's gun, but I've traded it to a Forum member for a NIB nickel 40 no dash from 1973 or 1974. Just couldn't resist the lure of the older gun, especially since it has all the paperwork and original box and such. Problem is, I also can't bring myself to fire it, since it's only factory fired, as judged by the three burn rings on alternating chambers. May have to trade for an Airweight sometime; haven't decided yet. Meantime, it's just resting in a nightstand drawer.

mm6mm6,

I think you are right!

I just had to buy mine - especially since it lacked the lock - wanted to encourage S&W to make more.

Did the same thing when the Schofield 2000 came out .... those are discontinued now.

Both the Schofield and the 40-1 are fine revolvers.

Can we count this one? It's a Model 40 no dash, but a 40 nonetheless.

I love my 40-1 in blue.

It was the retirement present for a friend who recently passed. I enjoy that revolver. It's a keeper.

I bought a 40-1 right away. The blue was spotty and uneven. The accuracy was abysmal. I just chalked it up to another FAIL by S&W to regain what they threw away. here's my Centennial, a pre-Model 40.

Here's the modern day shoddy reproduction.

I bought a blued one and like it! Shoot's very well and have had no issue's with it at all, Smith can still build em right when they want to. It's on the top right in the pic.

I acquired mine in March. It's the only revolver I own and it quickly became my EDC.

Sorry, no pictures. I have the 40-1 in nickel, plain steel and color case hardening. I also bought their brother, a model 42-1 airweight. So I have a set of four and I just set them aside as safe queens. I'm in the process of looking for their older mates in no-dash.

I know this is an old thread, but I don't care (better to reply here than start an identical thread, right?)

Anyways, I completed my Model 40-1 collection today:

Top: Nickel Model 40-1, with a Tyler T grip. It's a favorite EDC of mine, in a Galco Summer Comfort.

Middle: Blued Model 40-1, with Secret Service grips. (I've also carried my Model 40-1 with these grips -- they are a huge improvement in shoot-ability over the wooden OEM grips.)

Bottom: case hardened Model 40-1, the crown jewel.I just picked it up today -- "new old stock", never fired. I will shoot it this week, but I doubt it will become a carry gun, it's just too nice!

This is the first case hardened gun I've held which was done by Turnbull I believe? Quite beautiful work -- I can't say my H&H double gun's case hardening is any better.

Can you (if you're still around & posting here), or anyone for that matter, tell me what these grips are? They are very beautiful (and especially if they're made for the 40-1, where grip choices are very thin pickings!)

Very nice trio

What about the engraved version?

Turnbull did not do all of the color case hardened S&Ws. Look under the grips for his logo. Either way they are great looking revolvers.

Those grips are made from Sambar Stag

I can not tell you who made them or when, but that is not an uncommon grip material from days gone by.

OLD THREAD! I know this is a pretty old thread, but man I love that gun. I've seen this picture before when Googling pictures of Model 40's. I'm hoping to find a no dash, but I love these just the same. I really like the stock magnas that come on them too! Such a gorgeous gun man. Hoping to have one one of these days!

I constantly bring up old threads. I wasn't around the revolver scene back when many of these great conversations happened. That is a very cool set man. LOVE IT! I want a couple myself one day. I do like that case hardened one, very cool but all 3 are beautiful! Congrats! The only Centennial I have is a 642 no dash which is growing on me.

I believe I have seen pictures of your's before. If you did shots with stainless looking speedloaders then I have. That gun is awesome!! I don't normally like stag grips, but man they looks exactly perfect on that gun. So beautiful!

Does anyone have any idea how many case colored 40-1s were made. I picked mine up at my dealer yesterday in as new condition with box (blue plastic) and all the papers and accessories. I wasn't looking but couldn't pass it up when I found it. Love at first sight.
