Default Input requested...1905, 4th change, Target

Looking for some input on a 1905 38 Special Target I spotted at a small gunshop. Mismarked as a "pre K-38" the pre-war smooth rear target sight caught my eye. Square butt, serrated grip frame. Barrel is 6" with a tall post front sight, adorned with a gold bead. The gun has the hump-backed hammer and the serial # is 6963xx, putting it late, I assume, in pre-war production. The finish is original and I would rate in the high 80's/low 90's. Sorry I don't have pics.

What threw me were the grips, as I had not seen grips like these before. Diamond Magnas with bright silver medallions, their condition exceeds the gun itself. After research here and in SCSW #3, they match what are described as "Diamond checkered Magna, walnut, pre-war/1936 to 1946" on page 22 of SCSW#3. I was not able to remove them from the gun to check for matching numbers, but their fit to the gripframe was impeccable, leading me to believe they are original.

Sooo...is the configuration unusual and is the gun worth the $425 asking price? Any input is appreciated.

Roe

Humpback hammers, on K-frames, are found in the 673xxx-677xxx
serial range. Its certainly possible for one in the 696xxx range to
be original. They were available, in 1939-1940 time frame.

Magna stocks were also available in the time frame. $425 is a very
good price for the gun - its probably where its at because of the
wear to the finish.

Later, Mike Priwer

Well, Mike - I guess we sold another gun. Tell that dealer we are
going to raise our percentage from 10 to 15%.

Congratulations. You absolutely must post pictures when you can. I have a 1935-vintage M&P Target on which I installed a humpback hammer even though it is an anachronism for that year's production. If you're going to shoot it, please let us have a range report.

Can't beat that price. Great score.

The grips and hammer (if truely a humpback) are worth more than you paid for the gun. Those grips (pre-war K magnas) would easily bring $300 if as nice as stated.
