Something other than turkey for Thanksgiving.
Anyone having a main dish other than turkey for Thanksgiving? This year we are having prime rib. We'll still have stuffing, sweet potatos, and all the other traditional side dishes, just no turkey. Everyone seemed to be getting tired of turkey and are looking forward to the prime rib. And prime rib sandwiches the day after!
I know, un-American, but it's PRIME RIB!

Back in my "married and living in Michigan" days, we didn't stick to tradition. We might have had a turkey for Thanksgiving, or maybe not. Many times for Thanksgiving or Christmas the BBQ would get fired up and we'd have steaks. Turkey's good, and there's a lot you can do with the leftovers, but there sure ain't anything wrong with prime rib on Thanksgiving!

I'm not much of a fan of turkey, and have been waging a campaign to substitute porketta, a rolled pork loin roast crusted with fennel, parsley, and cayenne pepper. When I was a single man, I did not host too many Thanksgiving dinners, but when I did, you can bet that porketta topped the menu, accompanied by pan-roasted baby reds, a spinach salad and a risotto with carrots, celery and italian sausage.
My GF for the last ten years is a traditionalist, however, and will not give up her turkey, although we do a double entree. Her oldest daughter was a vegetarian until she tasted porketta; now she is carnivorous as the rest of us, so at least I can say I have brightened up the holiday for at least one wandering soul.
The New Yorker's Calvin Trillin has been waging his own campaign for years to replace Thanksgiving turkey with spaghetti carbonara. Now I love a good carbonara, in fact I had a delicious angel hair carbonara just the other day for my birthday. As tasty as it is, however, pasta just does not measure up as a holiday entree. But I would gladly do without sweet potatoes to make room for it.

Not Just Turkey
We will have turkey and a smoked venison ham. We have had standing rib roast, smoked bluefish, leg of lamb, pork crown roast and other things. Old cure Smithfield ham is always delicious. I really like the oyster cornbread stuffing and indian pudding and sweet potato casserole as much as the meat. Happy Thanksgiving to all...

What's cooking for Thanks Giving dinner? Venison ham, Hungarian Partridge (Not PATRIDGE) and Ring Neck Pheasant (AKA Chinese Chicken) all done on the smoker. Also we will have sweet taters, green peas, carrots in brown sugar, honey and cinnamon glaze and tree branch rolls (Bisquick biscuit dough wrapped around an barkless tree branch of about three inch diameter and cooked on the smoker). MMMMMMMMMMM GOOOOOD!!!
All harvested by yours truly (cept for the Bisquick, brown sugar and cinnamon). And yes, I got stung a few times stealing the honey. But it's worth it.

ham or prime rib. We typically make some grilled turkey breasts for traditionalist guests. My house = red meat. If I'm going to lay a spread I need something I can put horseradish on.

We like wild game for Thanksgiving, if possible.
This year it's two ruffed grouse that my son got, a snowshoe hare that I killed and a small piece of venison someone gave us.
There are only my wife, son and I home this year so it should be enough.
My wife is going to make her famous dinner rolls to go with.
I'm lobbying for cornbread, pecan and bacon dressing to go with the birds.
