Default Best Buy Ad

True story - Check the link at the bottom of the article. Also, I found this same ad in my Sunday paper yesterday.

I won't be buying **** from Best Buy this year... or next.

November 23, 2009 - 12:12 pm
Finally: A holiday Best Buy can endorse
Three years ago, electronics retail giant Best Buy was in the middle of the "War on Christmas" controversy.

A company spokeswoman - Dawn Bryant - announced they would not use the word "Christmas" in their advertising:

"We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them."

Hmm... so mentioning "Christmas" in its advertising is somehow disrespectful of other holidays?

They have since started using the word Christmas in some ads - but it's very limited.

The American Family Association lists Best Buy as a company that "marginalizes Christmas" .

But this weekend, we learned a bit more about Best Buy's bizarre corporate logic toward Christmas and other holidays.

Here is the advertising circular that was in Sunday newspapers all across the nation - including the Seattle Times.

Best Buy - the company that will not allow the words "Merry Christmas" in its advertising - has no problem wishing people a "Happy Eid al-Adha" - an important Muslim holiday.

No "Happy Thanksgiving" - although there is a directive to shop online on Thanksgiving Day. Merry Christmas is not allowed in their ads. But Eid al-Adha? Let's all celebrate with a plasma TV!

Listener Neal brought this ad to my attention. He wrote:

"This makes my blood boil that they will go out of their way to have a Muslim festival recognized that has nothing to do with their sale and then they won't even acknowledge or give a Thanksgiving Day well wishing."

Let me be clear: I think the whole "War on Christmas" controversy is overblown.

But I cannot wrap my brain around a company that shuns Christmas while embracing Eid al-Adha.

Political correctness sure does inspire inconsistent, hypocritical lunacy.

They wouldn't use Christmas and wouldn't let the Salvation Army do it's thing of the side walk last year.

They did a couple of other things against supporting the military and they went belly up a month after Christmas

Wyoming told them don't let the door hit you in the ***.

To be honest, stuff like this no longer bothers me. The entire commercialization of Christmas is the American way of doing things. But then again I'm a scrooge anyway.

We Americans as consumers are spoiled. We want it cheap. We want more for our money. And we want it now!

If you look hard enough, you can find at least one thing you don't like with any number of Americas largest retailers. None of them are perfect and don't try to be. But yet we expect them to be.

I will continue to shop at Best Buy because I like the store and the service.

I have not shopped Best Buy for at least 10 years due to it's customer relations policies. Long story on how they offended me, but I don't let my family shop there and I tell everyone who'll listen not to shop their. If I needed something vital and Best Buy was the only place that had it I'd do without, they made me that mad.

After seeing this post I got curious and found my newspaper ,The Topeka Capital-Journal, aka "the daily wipe", and checked out the Best Buy ad. There was no "Happy Eid al-Adha" to be found. They must be targeting specific areas with this nonsense.

The Happy Eid al-Adha was in the local ad here, and also online. I've bought from Best Buy in the past, but no more. And I emailed Best Buy corporate to tell them what I think about their ad. There's too many other electronics stores around here. I don't need Best Buy!

Its all commercialized to the extent that it would to people good to turn their backs on it.
I dont give or recieve christmas gifts... why, I dont care for the commercialization and would rather give people I care a lot for gifts at random and unexpected times.
It honestly means more to them and you that way.
With all thats wrong, in all manner of things, in all manner of places... if a retail store, who is in business to make money, deciding to not use the word "christmas" in their advertising is what sets your blood boiling... either you dont have a TV, pay attention to the world at large, or are maybe looking for a reason to be angered and offended.

As a consumer, I think it's 'offensive' that a company/corporation will take money from people that are purchasing gifts for Christmas, but refuse to acknowledge that they are Christmas shopping! I am always amazed that people let these companies get away with taking away their Holidays and traditions. Again, they say they don't want to offend anyone by mentioning Christmas, but I'm offended that they don't mention Christmas... If people just stood up for themselves and voiced their disgust, I would imagine that we could force a change.

To me, mentioning a holiday, or religious day should not be construed as offensive, and I don't care what religion is mentioned. If a Jewish, Budist, or Muslim (or even Atheist) holiday is commercially viable enough, then I'm sure a company in this country would want to use it as a selling/advertising opportunity, why would I be offended if that happened? Hey, we are talking about how companies are conducting themselves, right... It's all about what they think will make them the most money, and with Christmas they want their cake (taking our money spent on Christmas gifts) and eat it too (not acknowledging Christmas). From a religious perspective, I believe that, as a country, we have long ago lost the true meaning, or spirit, of Christmas.

I think that groups representing religions that are in the minority in this country, or those that have no beliefs at all in God, have brought all of this pressure to label the mere mention of Christmas as "offensive." As long as we have the freedom to believe what we want in this country, why rain on someone else's parade...?

Just my 2 cent rant for the day, I hope I didn't offend anyone; "Happy Holidays!"

First people began to cross Christ out of the word Christmas, writing only "X-Mas" instead . . . totally oblivious to what they had done.

Today, no one wants to offend the anti-Christians . . . which offends me greatly. I told Best Buy where they could stick it a month ago on another issue.

Nice way of putting it, Tom; this really is anti-Christian, but because we are the majority in this country, the expectation is that we just have to deal with the insult... Again, I believe people should stand up for themselves regarding these issues, and voice their objection to the offending companies and organizations. I guess the amazing thing in all of this is the complacency that most people have.

It's after Thanksgiving (I'm one of the one holiday at a time crowd) so...

Merry Christmas everyone!

And while Christmas is commercialized and we mostly all participate in gift giving, take a few minutes and think about the birth of Christ during this joyous holiday. After all, he is our Savior.

If you find that offensive, please feel free to put me on your ignore list, I don't really care if you read my posts anyway.

Surprisingly, I tend to agree with Jim. I am a practicing Christian (deep water Baptist) but I hate Christmas time and dread it's coming each year. Commercialization has turned it into a farce so much to the point that even the U.S. economy can be impacted by a successful or unsuccessful "Christmas Season" in the retail market. I see very little, if anything, that is Christ-like in Christmas.

As much as I personally dislike Best Buy, for other reasons, I do support that we still live (for now) in a free market society and they have the freedom to market as they see fit . . . and each of you have the freedom to shop elsewhere. Whether they do or do not openly capitalize on the Christmas season is irrelevant, 95% of what "Christmas is all about" is to get you to spend your money.

Learned something new...thanks!

As for buying at Best Buy - let's say BB has your TV, Laptop, etc. at $999 instead of the next closest competitor's (let's say Sears) price of $1199. Which supports your ideals better - giving $1199 to reward a company for using the word "Christmas" to get your money or spending the $999 at BB and giving the balance to your church or other Christian charity?

Actions speak louder than words...

we will NEVER shop at that store again. Didn't match advertized price, then insisted we buy software that THEY said was for vista and then we found was not vista compatible. They would not return our money, just a credit when it was their fault! Said it was policy, well guess what, it's our policy we don't shop there anymore.

Sip, thanks for the LOL; funny stuff...

I'm guessing here, but I think the reason BB includes that Muslim holiday in their advertising in some markets may have to do with them being based out of Minneapolis; there's a big Muslim population in that area...
