Model 624 Lew Horton Value???????
Just picked up a Model 624 Lew Horton with a 3" barrel from Cabela's. Gun is in excellent condition with the box. Has the smooth wood grips with three finger grooves. However the label was missing on the box. Does have all the paperwork. Paid $699. Fair price??? Thanks to all responses.

Buy it now or kick yourself in the arse later! I truly believe in love at first sight when it comes to S&W's.

Holsters for the Model 24-3 and 624 3" Combat .44s from Lew Horton were an extra cost option at the time the guns were first available. They occasionally show up on ebay. The holster styles differ slightly from one another though they are both smooth black leather with a suede leather lining. The 24-3 holster was a traditional style belt holster, while the 624 holster was a pancake style.

nice! looks about like mine. I think you did OK (I paid about the same). I paid $550 for one without the orig. grips (much less box or papers), and then paid the difference for a set of grips. Been really happy with this gun.

mitchsnap - here's a picture of the 624 factory holster. It's marked "BLW 624" and has S&W logo about size of dime. In new condition like this, they'll fetch near to $100

I also may have an opportunity to buy one of the first 100 624's. Seller states gun has gold lettering and comes in a wood presentation case with red lining. What's the gun worth NIB???? Thanks.

Others will chime in..............
I believe we had a thread some time back with one of these limited guns. I think the consensis was: not worth alot more than std model.

I own a 3" 624. I think the real "value" is if you want a short gun, it's already made up & does not need to be custom 'smithed.

Musta been back in the "olden days".
I think I paid $675 for my 624ND 3" LHS, about a year and a half ago.
Nice piece - perfect camping gun.

There seems to be a challenge regarding if this gun is a Lew Horton editon or not. I'm currently marketing this gun as a Lew Horton and don't want to mislead anyone. The model is a 624 no dash. I've enclosed some updated pics. Maybe someone can comment on this as to whether it is a LH or not. There was no documents with the gun to support it as a LH. I was under the assumption that this configuration was only for Lew Horton. Check out the pics and let me know. Thanks again to all who respond.

I had this same question regarding a 624 3".
I emailed Lew Horton and they responded the next day with an afirmative on the 624. I printed out a copy and just stuck it in the box.
I pasted the copy so you can get the E address for Lew Horton

Dear Bruce,
The gun you are inquiring about is indeed a Lew Horton's Special. It was made for us by Smith & Wesson in July of 1985.

Good morning,
I purchased a 3" Smith & Wesson Model 624 no dash, ser # ALV09XX.
I understand Lew Horton Distributing requested this variation built to your specification, though few others were distributed else where.
May I ask if this particular .44 Special was distributed by your Company?
Thank you very much in advance,
Bruce Vining

So Mitch, you selling it for $699?
Having bought one for $700 a few weeks ago without the original grips, I've done a little research. It appears that all of the 3" Model 624s were made pursuant to a Lew Horton order in 1985 and 1986. However, some of the 5,000 made were sold to other distributors by S&W.
I saw your photo of the note about the cylinder being tested. Are there any markings on the box itself? BTW when I called S&W to verify that my serial number wasn't part of the product warning, the guy had me hold and then told me on the spot that it was good to go.

One year ago at a gun show i passed up on a $600 3" 624 with the original Combats because i was in search of a 3" 625. Went back to the table a little later and noticed that someone much smarter than me did not pass up on it.
I guess all is not bad because i recently bought a 3" 629-1 Horton w. box at a local auction...but not near as cheap.

Thanks CH47gunner for that suggestion. I have emailed LHD regarding my 624 with S/N. Let's see what they have to say.

Right-ON Bob. I've got both guns and both holsters.......Funny some people still believe they came with the guns, If I remember correctly they were a $35/40 option.

SCSW states that the first 100 were engraved. The s/n on mine is ALU00xx AND it came plain, in a plain cardboard box. Never saw one like you describe.

I was a fervent fan of Skeeter and got all 3 of the 624's when they
came out in 1985. In fact I had previously gotten a 3" 24-3 with
the duty holster. I subsequently sold the M24 but kept the holster.
Here are the LH 3" .44 Special holsters:
The pancake is one of the nicest, high riding, N frame holsters
around. Here is the LH 624 with some Spegels on it:
I have never been able to get this gun to shoot as well as the 4" version but it sure is fun anyway!

Just wanted to post this. It is in fact a LH Limited Edtion. It's almost like getting a letter of record for free... Very nice of LH to provide this info. Thanks again to CH47gunner for providing that suggestion.
Hello Mitch!
Your Model 624 is indeed a Lew Horton Special Edition. It was manufactured in 1985. That version of the Model 624, and the blue Model 24 that came before it, were made to our specs, and were both our exclusive. Hope that helps.

Good Morning,
I recently purchased a 3" Smith and Wesson Model 624 no dash .44 Special with serial number AHT3209.
I understand that Lew Horton Distributing requested this variation built to your specifications. I'm unaware of this configuration being available elsewhere.
May I ask you if this particular .44 special was distributed by your Company?

Like the op and many others here who share a love for the 44 special cartridge I had a hankering for one. My first one was a 624 6.5" bbld one. I was hooked. Next one was a 24-3 4" bbl and the last was a 24-3 3"bbld one. Love all three. Frank

general reply
Ok I read through the entire series here. I have a chance for a Lew Horton 1 of 100 guns in a presentation case un-turned cyclinder mint up the wazooo.
I can see some cheesy looking engraving on it which has about killed the deal for me. "special edition"
What is so special about Lew Horton guns? What did their shop do in terms of actual work to the mechanical aspects to make the side arm better. I have seen some Talo guns that didn't turn out so well.
I just can't imagine anyone signing their company name to the quality of the text engraving I saw on this model 624. Then I hear about the recall and I have warning alerts.
Rather have a model 629 at this point unless 1 out of 100 actually means something special. I am saying if you engrave the text "special edition" does that make it special. Hope not
The seller is asking $950
