Just had one of those mornings...
...where you find yourself walking around in your PJs, outside, in the dark, gun in hand.
The whole house was woken up by a strange noise at 4:36, sounded like something running on the roof or someone trying to force open our french doors. Lasted 2-3 seconds, then nothing.
Looked around real good after the sun came up and could not find anything. I still don't know what it was, and that really bothers me.

We used to have a neighbor's cat that would run across our roof at all hours of the night. Being woke up constantly got real old fast. I placed a pet fence shock wire on top of the beam he was using to access the roof. A few nights later we heard a large crash and and an animal making a fast exit off of the deck. He never got on the roof again.

That was my first thought also. You'll also want to check your attic vents for security, Coons in the attic are a major PITA.

You probably already know this, but you need a guard on your chimney so no 'coon can get into it. I'm told they are usually very destructive, although the one who visited us was not at all so. He still left black footprints from the chimney, however.

I agree check for coons, I had to screen all louvers and place chimney screens to keep them out also trapped 9 of them in a havahart trap and provided transport to that happy hunting ground where the can spend eternity .

Yeah I have and found two young men trying to load my motorcycle into the back of a pickup. The sound of me racking the slide on my Colt 1911 got thier attention and after one look they were gone! This was about 15 years ago or so. I will take the furry little critters anytime!

Yeah I had one of those nights once. You faired a little better than I did. A car ended up mistaking my porch/living room as a parking lot. I ended up doing the whole gun in hand thing, but I wasn't wearing any pj's!

Yeah, probably just coons on the roof.
It's amazing how fast you can wake up from a deep sleep, grab a weapon and head out into the dark without really thinking about it. I did get a funny feeling while checking outside (.45 in hand) when I remembered someone down the street had a bear sighting last week.

Border Patrol broke up a group of 20+ illegals Saturday night. I was just home from the community holiday party 10PM. Took my 637 and put it on my nightstand. Someone is knocking at my door. Well the dogs explode, I grab my gun, but I can't see out because the lights reflection on the glass. I would have let the dogs out, but my neighbors had been 10 mins behind me, and it may have been them. Flipped on the yard lights let the dogs out, They run to the gate. Called my neighbor to be alert that night, and went to bed. The size of the group led me to believe it was mexican hikers not mules, but ya can't tell the difference.
