S&w ID help....
i think this is the right section for thi but i recently inherited a few old guns... all are marked with there model # except one.... its a old smith and wesson 4" blued .38 sp revolver...there are only 2 markings on the gun other than the normal stamping, the serial which is a 6 digit number on the butt and under the barrel with no letter in front, the serial starts with 636xxx (from what i have gatherd that means its pre ww2) and a 5 digit number on the face of the cylinder and on the frame under the cylinder... i have been searching for hours trying to find a model number and have come up empty... any hep would be awsome thanks...

Hi, and welcome. This is a Military & Police K frame .38, also called the 1905. From the photos, it is a pre-WW II gun, but it has later post-war stocks (grips). It was named the model 10 after 1957 and a variant is still in production, 110 years after the first ones were made.
If you can give a partial serial number (123xxx), I'm sure someone would be able to tell you when it was made. Hope this is helpful.

I would guess about 1932. Someone else reading this will have a gun close to your SN and can get you closer to the year, or confirm it.

I agree that 1932 sounds about right, maybe 1933. I have 649954 that was shipped in 1935, but mine is a target model and may have sat on the shelf for a while before it was shipped.

cylinder release doesn't look pre-war! neither does the trigger.

It appears to have been reblued sometime in it's life. The hammer and trigger should be color case hardened rather than blued. It could very well have been done before coming into the family. That may explain the post 1968 grips and newer style thumb latch.
A little clean up and light scrubbing with 0000 steel wool and oil and you'll have a fine shooter.

Hi, I have posted a similar reply to this before. I do not work for them, but try some Flitz Polish on it if you choose. It worked great on my 1919 shipped M&P. Bob
