What's a Lew Horton 3" 629-1 worth?
I may be buying, what is the market value? Lightly used in SS and may have the original combat grips and an extra set of after markets. Thanks in advance.

I have owned one of the Lew Horton 624 for several years; it has proven to be an excellent revolver in all regards. It has very good accuracy for a combat handgun, and is chambered in one of my all time favorite calibers; the time proven .44 Special. I have used full power loads in the 1000 fps to 1100 fps without issue.
It is my opinion that this model Smith is for me just about the perfect defense handgun. It is a full sized N frame and that makes it easy to control full power loads.
There was an issue with a small number of the 624 having a problem with the cylinder heat treating; I believe that there was a post on this forum regarding the serial numbers involved; this was one thing I checked before purchasing the one I own.
On GunBroker in the last year or so I have seen this model being offered at $ 700 to over 1000 depending on condition and if box and contents are included, and of course the factory grips are a big plus as well. I believe that I paid in the six hundred dollar area several years ago for a 624 that had less than a box of ammo through it and was in extremely good condition, and I had no quibble with the cost at that time.

It's gotten to the point that I cringe when guys talk about Lew Horton guns. There's no such thing. Horton is one of the three big S&W distributors. RSR and Camfour are the other two, and there are many smaller outfits. These guys buy guns from the factory in lots of various sizes with a particular set of features, then resell them to retailers. I haven't seen anybody talking about an RSR 629, or a Camfour 610 because, again, no such thing. In the mid-80's Horton ordered a huge lot of 3" 629's. They're not rare. There have been many issues of that gun since, sold through various distributors. Value is what you're willing to pay, but the going price seems to be in the $600-800 range.

I paid 449 for one about 1.5 years ago,
It was a good deal,
There is another at a local priced at 700 just sitting there, I could get it for 600, And it just still sits.
Remember internet is not real sale prices in shops and face to face.

I agree! No such thing as a Lew Horton gun. I have a 28-2 that I bought new from Montgomery Wards in 1978...does that make it a "Montgomery Wards" gun??
As for value on the 629-1 3", for some reason, these seem to bring more $$ than the later -2, -3, or -4 3" 629s. $600-1000 seems normal.
