Default It’s coming but the hysteria is here already

It’s coming but the hysteria is here already. Winter storm, snow fall expected – bread, milk, and bottled water disappearing from the store shelves. The local hardware store is putting out its stock of snow shovels purchased in 1958. At least those snow shovels were still being made in the USA then. The weather speakers are beating the drum with constant up dates. The end of the world is coming. It’s really going to bad. Them there yellow trucks were spraying technically sophisticated salt brine on the road yesterday. I hope this time the yellow truck drivers remember to lower the plows so we don’t have that several inch layer of ice on the roads. My one neighbor “Cash Money” still hasn’t gotten over the last major snow event. One of those yellow trucks rolled over on his property spreading salt where it wasn’t needed. The tree hugger he is hired “Johnny Saw Cash” to litigate with the state over the property damage. The state sent in their best legal person George Stoneman. Not a smooth move on the part of the state. There are signs all over this part of the state as to what the last George Stoneman did. The state and "Cash Money" settled for an unspecified amount.

All we can do is wait for the snow!

What is it with people and weather?

Even up here in the Poconos, every time it snows some people act like we're being invaded.

It has to do with globull warming, or cooling, or climate change, or something.

It can all be fixed by spending tax dollars!

Default Winter Storm Watch

Hope y'all see how ridiculous this looks to the rest of the nation that really gets snow.
We, over the last few years here in NC, have gotten little or no snow each winter. Consequently, when the 'weather gurus' say we are under a winter storm watch or warning, everybody panics, because most of us have little experience in coping with driving in it and contending with other people who use no common sense when they do.
In addition, there seems to be an unwritten state law, that requires you, upon notice of a winter storm, to go to the grocery store and buy milk, bread, and bottled water 'Just in case'. Doesn't make any difference if you drink milk or not. Just get it.
I am a native North Carolinian, although I have lived for extended periods in 'snow country', and I try to stay off the roads when the white stuff starts falling. I get my milk, bread, and water early, and don't have to contend with the crowds at the last minute.
In addition, I have a 'real' snow shovel from when I lived in the NC mtns(above statements don't apply to the High Country), which I will only loan out to family and really close friends, none of whom live close by.
Hunkering down for the ensuing storm, I am
Shaggist
P.S. I bet we don't get 2" accumulation.

Absolutely miserable right now here in Butler, Georgia. Forty-two degrees and hard rain. The ground is so saturated that as soon as it starts to rain, all the ditches and puddles immediately fill up. I am expecting septic tank problems at any time. One of my colleagues told me her father-in-law had measured 42 inches of rain since the middle of September. They used to say that the average yearly rainfall in most of Georgia was a convenient 52 inches, an inch a week on average. We had fallen nearly a year behind in rainfall totals over about the last four years, running a double-digit deficit each year. I think we caught up this Fall. The drought is over, for now at least.

Here on the coast we don't usually see snow. They said this AM we will have 15 ft. seas, beating up the beaches again. If we so much as see a flake, everything shuts down for days, so the heck with the milk, off to get more beer.

NC can certainly get snow. I remember several years in the 80's when we got 4 to 12 inches several times in the lower piedmont. Also remember 2 times the public schools around Boone were closed for about 4 weeks due to ice and snow.

This is a big storm system, I have felt it forming for the last 30 hours. The worst snow storms in NC are in El Nino years (like now), and they form in the deep south, not the north or west like normal storms.

If things turn cold quick, it could turn into a big ice storm, and that is a big problem no matter where you live.

Last week all 3 Milwaukee stations caused a panic, the whole state was shut down they were predicting between 6 to 18 inches of snow. I got up in the morning and it was rain.

Further north they got lots of snow, the Racine Kenosha area was all slush. But the panic was the same.

Aloha,

You think that's bad, try living in the middle of the ocean.

Mention Hurricane or severe tropical storm and the shelves are cleaned of Everything. Toilet paper to 4 x 8 plywood.

Funniest is watching people stocking up on Frozen foods. I didn't know that many people have generators. Wonder how many have Enough fuel to last over a week before the cavalry gets to Hawaii?

Side note, Hawaii has ethanol in it's gas and it does bad things to older cars and boat motors. So, there are places to get Non ethanol gas for use in boats. I go and get boat gas to use in my Honda generators. I've personally seen what ethanol gas does to Honda outboards, need fuel system overhaul.

Three years ago this Jan. an ice storm rolled through the Springfield MO area. It started at about 9:30 p.m. By 10:00 p.m. the bradford pear tree in my front yard was down. Later, limbs were falling from the black walnuts also.

We were w/o power for 4 days. Others in the area went as long as 12 to 15 days w/o power. Be thankful you are only getting snow.

You need generators in my experience. When the national guard gets there with ice you can run your blenders and make frosty drinks

"...Last week all 3 Milwaukee stations caused a panic, the whole state was shut down they were predicting between 6 to 18 inches of snow. I got up in the morning and it was rain...."

All of it did not go north, we got about 10", but it was so windy it was hard to tell. Our weathermen spent all of there time (every 5 minutes it seemed like ) with blizzard warnings. Then the next day it was below zero, so it was constant windchill warnings, and how long it would take for bare flesh to freeze etc. etc. )

Does this change year to year (seems to happen every winter ) so we need the constant warnings 24 hours a day, every year?

Here the big weather story is what happened a year ago. Not much happening now so we get treated to stories of how bad the snow was last year. They just like to hear themselves talk.

We started winter 10 days ago with 13 inches of snow and the worst blizzard in 30 or more years, followed by 2 days of below zero temps. By Friday everything was back to normal. Around here we just roll with the punches. I didn't even hear of any marked increase in stuck cars or accidents.

I understand as he was speaking the temperature went up 5%. Based on that if we could get him, Palosie, and Gore all talking at the same time we will have a mild winter. At least 5% above average.

"P.S. I bet we don't get 2" accumulation."

We have at least a foot here in SW Virginia and it's still snowing steady. Prediction is close to 2 feet by tomorrow afternoon.

Took me an hour to make my 25 mile drive home, including a 5 mile stretch of the Jefferson National Forest. VDOT couldn't keep up with the snowfall. At one point we were getting 2" an hour.

Then winter I moved to my little rural town 30+ years ago, was a historic cold spell. The Willamette River had literally frozen over, so had Multnomah Falls. Quite a sight, if you've never seen a 300' waterfall frozen solid. They actually repeated some century-old photos, like driving a car across the Columbia River on solid ice too. The Cascade Locks were frozen solid, no matter.....no barge traffic moving anyway. Traveling the Gorge was spectacular, as there are numerous small falls all along a stretch between The Dalles & Portland--when it was open. One day was so cold and such a fierce wind, that a new subdivision fence that had been placed with 8x8" timbers holding it up, simply cracked off at ground level and fell over....all 1/2 mile of it.

The main street of my town was piled high with snow, so you couldn't see across to the other side. I had taken the back route to avoid the ice-treacherous freeway and the tourist bozos thereon. I had a 1954 Willys Overland with aggressive snow treads, and we could drive anywhere there was traction. Traction was actually better in the mountain route, as the snow hadn't been compacted to 5" of solid ice from all the traffic on the freeway.

The average temp for about 2 or 3 weeks was -10 or -15 F. It was sort of fun the first week....and all were tired of it the end of the 2nd.

Amazing how the pace of life can change depending on a few water crystals.

HooRah for Water Triple Point!!!

Talking

Anna Nicole Smith is buried, Michael Jackson is over, Tiger Woody is getting started, and now it's snowing.

Isn't 24 hour news television wonderful. Which is the bigger disaster: government health care or FEMA response to December '09 blizzard?

You don't know because the power is off for 3 days? Isn't that special.

Yep. It's all over now. Somewhere between 2-10 inches, depending on where you are around here.
Several highways are closed due to wrecks, businesses are closing right and left and they're saying stay home unless you have an emergency.
Stores were packed today but the people were patient and cordial. Except for the guy in Kernersville. A buddy of mine had to settle down Mr. Weather Panic in the line at the checkout.
Oh boy! Here comes the sleet! And the ice! Now for the wind! If we're lucky, we won't lose power.

All you boys talking about crazy weather are reminding me of the one indisputable advantage to living in CA -- the mild climate.

Now, if we could just clear out all the liberals...we might have a decent state again...

We can get a foot or more of snow and driving will be fairly normal in 24 hours or less. That's because there's a lot of plow trucks in Minnesota, I'm guessing North Carolina isn't as well equipped. Stocking up on a few essentials to ride out the storm isn't such a bad idea, it might take awhile to get dug out...

If you get stuck, don't do what these guys did:

It’s basically over now for the aftermath. They’ll be talking about this for years. It’ll become part of the folklore. The dig out or melt out now begins Things should be back to normal by midweek.

On Monday morning, I guarantee you at least one of the tenants will complain that they couldn't get out to the store because the snow removal crew didn't magically remove all the ice and snow immediately upon its hitting the ground.

And I guarantee you that two or more tenants will not have moved their vehicles to the other side of the lot for the plow, messing up the lot cleaning for everyone else.

And I guarantee you that at least one fight will break out from all those bored and housebound seniors over when to turn on and off the Christmas tree lights.

It's like running a dorm for old people.

The disaster has been averted and the world as we know it has not ended.

The most popular breakfast in North Carolina now is French Toast. After all, what else can you do with all the eggs, bread, and milk you bought before the "storm"?

Worth mentioning during the snowy weather of yesterday the TV satellite system maintained signal. Occasionally/momentarily we had the pink screen not bad all things considered. As for the Hughes satellite system no outages either. Occasionally I’d go out and brush of the dish.

I got an email with some pictures earlier today, from a friend in W.V. She had 20" and it was still snowing!

Ha! I called it!

Except the fight was over when the Three Kings are supposed to show up in the manger.

Well I've had enough winter for this year, the lights flickered all damn weekend and yesterday at about noon the sun popped it's bright head out....and the snow on the lines started to let loose, and bounce around.

Know what happens when high power lines make contact? it's called arcing and it'll make you jump when you have a few thousand watt ZAP!

Blew a fuse on the power company's box and they had to find me first took til about seven PM to do so.

As far as snow fall-about a foot, getting a bit more now.

The heaviest snowfall I remember was about 1946. Like this one, it moved up the coast. New York got 36 inches, and where I lived in Connecticut we got about 30 on top of what we already had. When they shoveled out the sidewalks, the snow was piled over my head, and I'm 6'3". Anybody else remember that one?

Here in Central NJ we got about 9-12 inches in the urban/suburban areas, up to 24 inches in the more rural areas. No power outages in my area.
I stopped at a local Shoprite about 2330 Friday night, it was mobbed, saw one couple had purchased TWO of the large packs of toilet paper. Occured to me that in the event of a major snow/freeze I'd be more worried about the pipes freezing and the toilet not flushing. I wonder how many people bought milk and didn't look at the expiration date. Snowed fairly steadily on Saturday but fairly gently, very powdery, no problem getting about on Sunday. Biggest annoyance for me is that the library closed at 1300 on Saturday due to "storm emergency".

Every morning I "look forward" to a 45 mile one hour drive to work. I drive a company van. I hate snow. An inch or two as predicted today paralyzes traffic. I gotta find another job. Fat chance of that, where I live.

1946? Damn man, I wasn't born until 47.

Seems like we always had more snow "back when". Now, I can remember some snow falls in the fifties that would have....aw, never mind.
