What is it worth?
A friend has a Model 65-5 with a 3" barrel never fired he is looking to sell for $400.00
That's seems pretty reasonable to me, how quick should I jump all over it?

I think that is a really good price to me for a 357 magnum in the condition you state. I'd be jerking my arm out of socket getting my wallet out.

Sounds very good...
I'd buy that without thinking more than about 1/2 second.

I passed on a similar one a while back For $425 But it was realy beat up & was in a dealers case at the gunshow..
I did instantly ask to see it though then after seeing it's awefull condition put it back.. He did sell it that day For what it's worth..
For an Unfired one for $400 I would be having shoulder surgery..

Opinion
Three inch barreled revolvers that are like new are extremely difficult to find.
I am assuming that you already have the 400 dollars needed. If not I would borrow the money and possibly sell some gun or accessories that you do not need to pay back the money.

I figured it sounded like a sweet deal. That unfired thing bothers me, though. I wonder how long I can stand it being unfired after I get it???
I've never met a .357 I didn't like.
I told him to consider it sold, and I'll be picking it up after the holidays.
Merry Christmas to me, VBG!

Sounds like a great deal!
Leaving it unfired versus fired won't add enough value over time to make much difference in how it appreciates, in my opinion. If you want to make money on the gun, buy it and turn it over right away. That will get you the highest rate of return. If you sold it in 30 days for a hundred dollars more than you paid for it, that would be an APR of 272.5% and you'd be without a nice revolver that sure sounds like a keeper to me.
Keeping it and shooting it will give you a better return in fun per dollar.
I paid too much for a HK P7 M8 six years ago and I could sell it now for more than I paid for it. I've shot it a lot, too.
YMMV.

Yep, I've decided to get it, and probably carry it as well. I'm sure it is lighter than my 686+, that one will become my nightstand/competition gun.
I'm not sure I like the rubber grip that is on it, but a nice set of wood grips with a good palm swell will make her look pretty.
Now to choose a name for her, hmm?
