Default 65 years ago today - The "battered *******s of Bastogne" relieved

65 years ago today, on Tuesday, December 26, 1944, the "battered *******s of Bastogne" were relieved in Belgium by elements of the 4th Armored Division of Patton's 3rd Army. My stepfather-in-law, J.J. Peattie, now deceased, was a young captain in the 4th Armored then. Much of the 101st Airborne Divison was surrounded and besieged by the Germans and foul weather - our General Anthony McAuliffe told the Germans "Nuts" when they requested that the hopelessly outnumbered outfit surrender.

Here's a link to notes taken by a member of the 101st that relive those trying days. Let us never forget their sacrifices.

Bastogne - Dec. 1944, a journal

At first, I was confrused. Seems to be a common occurrence these days.

There was a good movie about Bastogne in the 60s. Anybody remember the name, or who played in it?

These are the stories that need to be repeated endlessly on the new shows, not the drivel and slop of meaningless celebrities who cannot function well enough to tie their own shoes.

Thank you for sharing and keeping the memory of their heroic actions alive.

A dear friends' father was a tank squadron cmdr. in the Battle of the Bulge. He won a silver star for action in holding the town of St. Vith viewed by military historians as the pivotal point in the Bulge. He retired many years later as a full Colonel.Harold Leach R.I.P.

There was a 1960's movie "The Battle of the Bulge"
which was filmed in Spain using M-48's as German tanks
Henry Fonda, Telly Savalas, Rovert Shaw, Charles Bronson among others

There is a much better Bastogne movie from 1949
called "Battleground" with James Whitmore & Van Johnson

Then of course there is "Band of Brothers" which is on Spiketv right now

Those were very tough men. General McAuliffe's reply of Nuts really stands out in the history of the US Army.
