Amazing what a little water will do. I think it is called the universal solvent. When used in the correct amount over an extended period of time it can reduce a mountain to a hill or turn a plain into the grand canyon.

I think the method is rooted in having parents who grew up during the great depression. It wouldn't have surprised me if my father had managed to wash his car with a cup full of water. In cold weather, I usually manage to wash my jeep with a few buckets of hot water out of the bathtub (the bucket fits there better than the sink.) But then I try to rinse it off a final time with the garden hose.

These giant shovels can be seen hereabouts in coal and copper mines --- its amazing to watch them fill huge pit trucks in three or four scoops. Google "electric mine shovels" for a look at some of them...
