Default Craziest or strangest gun trade...

Went by the general store yesterday to pick up a smith that had come in, noticed a very peculiar fellow as I was filling out the paperwork.

I saw him trying unsuccessfully to get the slide to release on a Colt Defender, then again a few minutes later on a Glock.

He finally strolled over to the Smith wheel gun section of the store, next to me, and the owner said, "so you're more of a revolver guy huh." He said, and I quote," Oh ya, big....S..&....W fan ( guy was clueless ), I had a silver colored one a few years ago that shot 38 S.P.L., but I traded it for a 79' Pinto Wagon."

I was cracking up at the counter, I hope the owner didn't sell him anything. But it got me to thinking, some people probably have some pretty strange and/or crazy trading stories, so let's hear em'....really good ones and the really bad uns' too!

Talking Crazy Gun Trades....

I once traded an Itaca 37 for a 1964 Honda S90. This I inturn traded for a Fox Model B double in 16 Gauge. The Fox I traded back to the Honda Guy for a NIB 6" S&W Model 66 (one gun from the first 6 to be shipped to Maine). The 66 I inturn traded to Satex Distributors in Texas for a 6" S&W Model 57 in Nickle. The Model 57 I inturn traded for a '68 Ford Mustang. I needed a car so I kept that....

Oh **** you had me Roll'in with this one.

Sorry I haven't made any trades yet.

I have Model 37 Ithica 12Gg and it's the best shotgun I have ever hunted with, extremely reliable and accurate.

Back in the early 1980's, I traded an 8-3/8" Model 27-2 even up for a mid 1970's Olds Toranado. My car had been stolen, my friend had this rusted land barge sitting around and he wanted a 27-2 like mine. I wasn't willing to give him my 6", so I found and bought him an 8-3/8" in the PC. The car lasted me over a year, the deal was fair, but my friend still has the gun. I should have walked.

I once traded a stainless Colt Officer's ACP for some work done on my 65 Mustang. A few years later I got furloughed during the Gingrich government shutdown and had to sell the car to a nice lesbian couple to make my mortgage payment that month.

This past November I traded a 4" pre-war, K frame RB 38 Special for a Grumman Sport Boat with oars and sailing rig. I've seen the sail rigs alone bring $275 so I got a great deal. I had picked up the S&W by trading an H&R top break and IJ 55, both in 38 S&W, to a gent with a table at a local gun show. In both cases I felt I was trading up.

I traded Safety Hammerless 38 (pitted, no blue left, broken firing pin etc) for a 1924 Colonial TRF chest style radio in mint condition. The radio didn't mean anything to the owner who found it in the attic of a house he bought but he did have a nickel Safety and wanted a matching one in blue.

I traded 3 psycho ex-girlfriends for an amazing wife.

Best trade I ever did. Not sure about the guys who got the ex-girlfriends though, probably did not do them any favors.

And as an added plus, my wife is an amazing shooter, and can hold her own with almost any of us. Instead of "so what are you going to buy me today?", I now have "So when are we going to the range?".

How perfect is that!

I've done a few trades, most recently an egyptian military rifle for a like new wire-feed welder and a coin collection (lots of nice seated liberty dimes and morgan dollars). Taken a gun or two in trade as well to close a car deal a couple times. No good Smiths though, a couple 870's and Ruger Blackhawk were the best ones.

Back in the late 1950s my dad and I were deer hunting in wisconsin. We met a local farmer that just missed a nice buck and blamed the gun, a beautifull winchester model 64 .32 special with a lyman peep. Dad bought it from him in the woods for $50. We included a ride to his farm about 3 miles away so he could pick up a shotgun and finish the day hunting.

Another time we had a strike at lockheed where I was a guard. A high ranking offical of the company wanted to ride with me and watch the picketts in my patrol car. We were wileing the night away talking and he mentioned he was thinking of selling a old sharps rifle and wanted to buy a nice .357 with the proceeds. I quickly offered a new S&W 27 8 3/8". We made the deal the next day. It was a .52 cal sharps carbine from the civil war that had the goverment conversion to 50-70. It was in very good shape!
Maybe a year later he spotted me and said his family wouldnt forgive him for the trade. I knew that sharps was worth maybe 5 model 27s!
I just said, Ok Bob, give me the smith back. I cant he said. I sold it! Ok Bob, give me the price of a new one. He almost stepped on my head running for the credit unions ATM!

In the 70s I traded a 1972 Damon Howatt Super Diablo recurve hunting bow for a Colt Frontier Scout .22 revolver and holster.

I recently traded a Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 WW2 rebuild and Greek return I won in a raffle for a 1968 Bear Super Kodiak and a 1962 Bear Kodiak bow.

What goes around comes around I guess.

I had a '91 Geo Tracker for sale, asking $1800 (very nice and fun vehicle, I kinda miss it but it helped me get my '74 Nova.) I ended up letting it go for $1450 and a Rem. 7400 synthetic in .270, complete with scope and hard case. Not too shabby im my opinion.

I also traded my brother a Chevy 8.5" 10-bolt rear end for a Marlin Model 9. Now that was a great deal!

About 20 years ago I traded a new in the box 25" Magnavox color TV and $500 cash for a Colt Model 1894 Army Model with a broken spring that wouldn't revolve the cylinder and it's original military holster, a Winchester 1890 .22LR with a bulged barrel (didn't know about that at the time), an 1890 in .22 Short with a severely pitted barrel, and a 1900 vintage Colt SAA .32-20 with steer head ivories which also had a severely pitted barrel. I sold the Colt 1894 & holster, both Model 1890's, traded the steer head ivories for a Lyman tang sight I needed for a Model 94 .30-30 (bad move) and traded the SAA and some cash for a beautiful Model 1908 Mannlicher-Schoenauer 9x56mm take down rifle which I later sold because I couldn't find ammo or suitable bullets for reloading. I think at the time I came out ahead on the whole package but sure would to have all those guns back today.

I traded a tractor for firearms last year because I felt like it was easier for someone to do that than have the cash with the economy being shot out like it is. I think I came out really good and the guy was tickled pink with his tractor. I sold a few of them off and kept a few that I got attached to right off of the bat. Hard not to be happy with either guns or tractors

Back in 2004 I traded a 1988 K-5 Blazer with leaking head gaskets on both sides and weak tranny for a Ruger P89, Ruger P94, Glock 21 and $2500.00 cash. It was going to be my parts truck to strip off parts for another 88 K-5 Blazer I still own. With what I got selling off both Rugers and the Glock plus the $2500.00 cash I was able to buy new parts instead of scavenging old/used parts.

i was a notary public for a while. the owner of the gun shop where i did a lot of business needed a BUNCH of documents notarized. I traded about 2 hours of notarizing documents for a pre 23 outdoorsman. when i got a 6 inch pre 28, i traded off the outdoorsman to my shooting partner who was REALLY jonesing for one and lusted after mine for years, he traded me a Kimber Hunter-Silleoute .22 rifle with Leupold vxIII 6.5-20 and bunch of factory kimber magazines. with good ammo, that .22 is the most fun, accurate bench rifle i have ever shot.

otherwise always traded cash

I once traded a TEC-9 threaded bbl. with four 32mags, flash suppressor and bbl tube. For a NEW Ruger P89, S&W model 28-2 and 100 357rds, and 1000 9mm-rds. A few years later I traded the used P89 for a NEW Mini-14. I also traded a well (very) worn Model 66 for a Norinko SKS and a Marlin 80DL. Last year I built a gentleman a super computer the ones that retail @ $2000. He gave me $900. and an unfired model 25 -1955- with moon & half moon clips -tools included but no box . I have traded a few other things in my time but none as cool as GUNS.

I once parlayed a pick up load of wood fencing and my brace of High Standard bullseye pistols (Citation w/ 7.5" fluted barrel and a 10-X) for a large down payment on my office building.

Later traded the factory 10-X box and target for a shooter grade High Standard with extra magazines.....

I traded a 14" bar Poulan chain saw that I had used hard for years for a 5" M&P in 95%+ in it's maroon box.

...Then I stupidly traded that for something I can't remember so it must not have been a very good secondary trade.

Traded a 44 mag Ruger Carbine for a Bear Recurve bow. At the time they were worth about the same but the bow was more accurate.

Traded a 20 dollar bill for a Baby Browning. Wanted $25 but I talked him down!

Well isn't it "four on the floor, a fifth under the seat, and a six-shooter by your side"?

I once traded a set of book shelves for a Bushmaster carbine. A Minister happened to stop by a yard sale I was having that included the bookshelves and a couple shotguns, among other things. He asked if I'd be willing to trade the shelves for a firearm. Obvioulsy I'd consider it so he went home to get the gun, few hours later he returned with a Bushmaster pistol. Said someone had turned it in and he did not want to keep it. Firearms in general didn't bother him, but that Bushmaster pistol he considered a little extreme.

This is 20yrs or more ago,My friend once had an auto repair buisness and his nieghbor next door was putting on a pig roast and was selling tickets at 10 bucks a head that included a band etc. A few of us use to hangout at the shop including my friends brother who never had 2 nickles to rub together but had this old .22 rifle that was missing a bolt that he had found in the trunk of a car he acquired for scrap. He traded that for admission to the pig roast.

Well, nothing quite like this one has been posted yet. I was 19 and working at a gunshop. There was a man who frequented the shop who was...eccentric to say the least. He wanted a Mini-14, we didn't stock them, but I had one of my own. He offered to trade me an Olive Baboon. No joke...a monkey...a bare-assed baboon for a Mini-14. I had him bring the baboon in the shop to check it out. The thing was vicious, borderline psychotic...I'm sure it would've killed me in my sleep. He ended up trading me some money for the Mini instead. If I had it to do over again; I'd have taken the monkey and taught it to paddle a tiny boat and retrieve downed ducks and geese while smoking a cigar.

In college, I traded a Winchester 190 .22 LR semi-auto rifle for forty (40) bricks of .22 LR.

I traded a S&W 2nd model HE .455 rechambered to .45 Colt and a Winchester M97 for a '53 F100 with a flathead V8. Should have kept the guns. Wound up trading the '53 for a Falcon and later sold IT for $50.

Default A few of mine!

1. I traded a Weatherby Fibermark 300Wby for the biggest picture window in my house. Window guy still has the gun, I still have the window.

2. I traded a Benelli SBE Limited for a surgery on my Lab's cruciate repair. My buddy Ervy got the Benelli and was to make monthly payments on cruciate repair. The Vet's office lady got fired, Ervey's old lady got pissed, my dog got the surgery, and the vet eventually got paid.

3. I just traded a Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45/70 26" barrel to Stoney for a CZ 550 416 Rigby (I used to own) plus $200 so Stoney could cobble together a house payment after Christmas, probably will trade back in a couple of months.

4. The big steel door on my gunroom was paid for and installed by Crazy Larry for a Rem 541T. Nice gun. It was for his normal son.

I'm sure there are many more my old soggy brain can't remember. In a small town guns are a great way to pay or trade.
