A distinctive pattern. Looks like the holster was so ill-fitted that the gun was about to fall out!

It's not that the members are any smarter here, they just remember when that gun first came on the market.

The guards put the gun UNDER the saddle of the 2nd horse. It was probably SOP, but then again, it's TV

Thanks for posting that. I don't think I've ever seen a Merwin Hulbert opened and checked liked that in a film.
Remember Randy Quaid in The Long Riders?

In the Gunsmoke clip, that is a First or Second Model SA Open Top Frontier Army with factory punch-dot engraving.
Now, if you open a Merwin like that you would see all the cartridges hanging on the ring of the recoil shield. When loaded from the loading gate, the head lip sets on the ring. This was their design to allow the unspent cartridges to stay in place and the emptys to fall out when opened like he did.
So, if it were ture to life, that bad guy just looked to be sure it was empty.
The above post is a Third Model DA Frontier Army or a 3rd DA Pocket Army. Hard to tell without seeing the grip frame.
