Default Help with Model 17 & 17-K22

I started looking for a used S&W Model 17 22 Cal but the prices were almost as much as a new one. Than I came across new model 17-K22 and the pictures show the K22 has a different grip. Since I am new at this can anyone help me tell if there are any other differences? Also, why are old, used guns so expensive?

Welcome to the forum. The answer is one word "QUALITY". The craftsmanship of the old ones are a lot better than the new ones.

Hi, and welcome! The newer Classic series K-22 is basically the same gun as the older K-22 models. The quality of finishing and workmanship is different, in that a lot of polishing and hand-fitting of the older guns is no longer done. Functionally, I think the newer guns probably work just as well as the older ones - others may have a different opinion.

Any grips for a K-22 are easily changed to a pair of your liking. You would need to know the grip frame shape on the Classic if you bought one, I think they are a round butt (all older K-22s would have been square butts).

Older K-22s (and many other Smiths) are expensive due to an active collector's market and their desirability as shooting guns. Some people reverse this order of importance. Kind of like money in the bank that you can use and will still appreciate in value over time. Hope this is helpful.
