Looking for articles, or information on custom gunsmith John Oberlies, of Dayton, Ohio, I think he was a fairly well known gunsmith in the 1930's. I have a couple items attributed to him, & would like to gain some more insight on his work.

I am interested in Oberlies and collect his guns. I can send you a copy of the only article I know that was ever written about him. Email me your address and I will send you the article and answer whatever questions you have.

Helo,

I am a retail firearms dealer in a south Dayton, OH community. I have a customer that has brought in 3 Oberlie guns for consideration to sell. @ are revolvers and 1 rifle. I would be interested in your article you have about him and, whatever other information you might have. You could also be a candidate for purchasing them

Thank you kindly
John Thyne

I see that this thread is fairly old. Does anyone have the John Oberlies article mentioned? I would very much like to get a copy if possible.

If you go over the DoubleGun BBS and contact a gent who posts there as
'Eightbore',,,he is a very knowledgeable about John Oberlies and collects his firearms.
I believe his first name is 'Bill'.

The DoubleGun BBS @ doublegunshop.com - Forums powered by UBB.threads™

You will have to register to be able to contact him.
Then you can send a PM or email through the Forum.

He is very active on both the SxS forums and also the 'Classic & Custom Sporting Rifles' section.
The latter section he has posted quite a few times about Oberlies rifles.

He was collaborating w/ Michael Petrov on a new edition of Mr Petrov's book on 20th Century American Gunsmiths to include a chapter on Oberlies. But Mr Petrov passed before the book was finished.

Hope this helps.

The only thing I have from J.Oberlies is a 1895 Winchester that was stocked by him. It has his deeply stamped name & Dayton,O. marking in the butt stock under the plate.
The metal has been polished and re-rust blued, I think a later addition, not up to what I'd think of as his standards.
