I Really Need Your Help On A 629-1 (PICTURE ADDED)
Someone is interested in a rifle I'm selling. I said I'd consider his S&W .44 Magnum as a partial trade if the chambers are recessed. He says he thinks they aren't recessed and that it's a 629-1. They sure look recessed in this picture he sent me. My question is, can I assumed it's pinned $ recessed if it says 629-1? Or at least recessed? It's 8 3/8" which I like BTW. Thanks for any help, everybody.

I second VM, I have a 629-1 and it is neither. But it is a beautiful revolver.

My 6" 629-1 is pinned but not recessed. A "transition" gun. So you never know based on the model dash alone.

Well, I'm not going for the gun because I really want a P&R shooter model 29, Nickle or blue in that order. This gentleman's 629-1 was nice enough to consider, though. But, VM. Doesn't it look like a tight space there between the cylinder and frame? I know it must be the light.

No. There's almost no gap on a counterbored cylinder.

I've just spent an hour trying to figure out if my 629-2 is pinned or recessed. Obviously I'm an idiot. If someone could explain this to me I would appreciate it.

If your S&W is pinned, you will have a ''pin'' going thru the frame and barrel. If it is recessed the cylinder on the end that you put the bullets in is countered bored, and the bullets will sit flush in the cylinder. Hope I said that right.

Thanks Marshall. That explains it for me. The way I understand things the guns that are pinned and recessed are considered higher quality, is that right?

I would say yes,my M 66-1 2.5''bbl is pinned and recessed, and I shoot it better than my 6'' 586. I think both are great''just because they are mine of course'', LOL!! But the 66 just looks like Smith and Wesson took their time and made a great revolver and added a custom touch to it by doing the P&R.
