K-38 Combat Masterpiece
I'm looking for my 1st combat masterpiece and have a few questions. Is there a model that's considered the best shooting/most desirable of the 38 combat masterpieces? Are the older revolvers, 4 and 5 screw, better quality than the newer 3 screw models? Thanks.

Generally the older the better as far as collectible. I have a blued 4' M15 from the mid 60's, a nickle 2" M15 from '75 and my favorite, a blued 4" pre M15 from about '55. It's the best shooter by far. They're all good, but older ones are more desirable.

Here's a few pictures of my recently acquired, 1950 Pre Model 15 Combat Masterpiece:

Nothing against the later dash numbers, i.e. -4 and on, but the early models seem to have stood the test of time. It might have something to do with the pride and skill of the employees working at the company which was still in the control of the Smith family up until the early sixties. Once the comapny started getting sold and re-sold, the quality started to slide. Maybe not egregiously so but that's the general impression. So, if you can find a no dash or maybe even a -1 or -2 Mod 15 for a decent price, buy it. You can't go wrong unless it's already horribly messed up.

I like the diamond grips, so older is better to me. Also, naming a revolver the "Combat Masterpiece" just sounds right to me...I guess I am old and PC never caught up with me.

I would target a combat masterpiece production date between 1950 to 1952. Also, I would get one with a target hammer and trigger.
Just like this one below,
Good luck,

I have a 4 screw pre-15 that is the most accurate S&W I have ever owned! It is in near new condition and, yes, I do shoot it. Mostly with 148HBWC light target loads.
