I was on gunsamerica and found a NIB Mod 4040 and finally got the money for it saved up. It came with everything that comes with NIB status. The other one I have is my favorite pistol and my summer ccw. According to the julian date codes on the box the new one was shipped 20 days after my other one.

Fast is fine;accurate is final

The new one cost me $715 (a bit pricey but how often do you see a NIB 4040?) and my used one was $600. I may have overpaid, but I generally don't buy guns to turn around and sell them, I plan on enjoying them for a long time. The biggest problem with the 4040 is that I have seen 4 of them and none of them have been cheap (I now own 2 of them). If I recall correctly there is a nice used one in the classifieds on this forum for a reasonable price.

A 4026 is on my list of 40 calibers I want, but they don't turn up everyday either. I would also like a 4004, but I have never even seen one of those for sale.

I have a lightly-used 4040PD and it's a great carry gun -- well sized, fun to shoot, concealable, rugged, and unique. If you ever want to sell one of them, let me know! When I bought mine, I had a wide range of S&W choices and I'm glad I picked the 4040PD.

Yours have the flatter-buttplate magazines. My pistol came with a single curved version and I liked it so much I bought a second one and I'm looking for a third. You might want to pick one of them up -- at least with my hands it gives a complete purchase on the grip.

The 4040PD has a distinct magazine design with a "ball plunger assembly" in the follower to guarantee slide lock on an empty, fired magazine, according to the insert that came with my pistol. It works.

Yeah the magazines are unique for this model, it doesn't really share with any other S&W. I only have two mags with the flat base plate, but those are the ones I carry in the gun while it rests in my IWB holster. The spare mags I carry have the curved base plate.
It is funny you mention that most people don't know this gun was ever made. Most of the people I have talked to have never heard of it either. I have a pet theory that since this and the Glock 26 were introduced at the same time, the 4040 lost the lightweight 40 cal battle. The Glock 26 holds more rounds, weighs the same, and costs less. According to the original list price the 4040 was around $800 MSRP when they came out! These have never been cheap, or inexpensive guns.

You should post a picture of your 4040, then I could say I have seen 5 of these great little guns.

Here's mine. This gun was bought "pre-owned" as it were from a dealer. It shows some holster wear on the slide and a little on the trigger guard, I may have it reblued but don't know what that would cost and if the slide has to be re-engraved in that case. I paid $525 in this condition and don't feel "taken" at all.

In excellent condition otherwise, I would call it: "broken in". Shown as I carry it: loaded and chambered, hammer down with safety/decocker on, with 155 gr. Fiocchi JHPs (XTP HP bullets) in the magazines.

That is a nice 4040 there. It looks like it has had some use, but that is what makes it your gun and not anyone elses. Even though my NIB one is nice, it certainly won't replace the one I carry every day.

Thanks, what I'd like to do with it in the fullness of time (aside from shooting it, of course) is to have it reblued and completely reconditioned by S&W. Really not that much needs to be done, it's a fairly indestructible pistol, all the stuff you see there is cosmetic, the works are perfect and very smooth.

I think it's a "unique enough" pistol that it deserves that treatment when I can afford it. In the meantime I'm very glad to have it as an everyday CCW. I'm reassured every time I pick it up and/or fire it that it will do what I ask of it.

I am about to buy one of these used. The one thing that scares me is that you have to put the magazine in "like you mean it". Is this normal or is there something wrong? if you just push it in with your fingers, it doesn't catch but if you give it a bump with your palm, it is snugly seated. Thanks

That is normal for all of the compact 40 Cal pistols, especially for the 4040 there is alot of spring tension in that magazine you have to overcome. It usually takes a good slap to fully seat the may on any of my 4040's.

If you pick up a good 4040 you won't regret it. Post a picture if you do get it.

As long as the magazines feed reliably you are good. Eventually the follower on well worn mags will stop locking the slide open after the last shot. 2 magazines will be fine to start with and give you a chance to see how you like the pistol. If you do like it, which is probable, magazines will come along on occasion at a good price.

I have a similar gun in the 4014 (although I also hope to find a good LNIB or NIB 4040 soon!).

They definitely need a good push to seat a fully loaded magazine. That's nothing to worry about.

FirebirdV8, That is a beautiful pair you have there. The 4040PD's, I mean! I hope that one day I can add one to my collection. It seems like an awesome idea to have something the size of a 3913 capable of shooting a .40!
