Default Just heard of a weird serial number

I can't find that number range in my SCSW

J frame, looks like a 3" 36. Guy says it is from the 70s. No model number in the crane, so might be a Chief's Special.

SN 55J168.

I figgered he was looking in the wrong place, but he posted pictures.

Y'all got any ideas on what/when this is?

It's a 3" standard weight barrel from 1971-72. It's called the roving or floating J series.

Think that's different? I've got one that ends in 0001.

The K numbers were the same way. When it reached the highest number for a series, the K would move. Thus K000001 through K999999 would be followed by 1K00000 through 1K99999, then 2K*****, etc.

Hi, in 1971-'72 the factory went from a J + number SN to number + J + number for those 2 years. This is a standard 3" Chiefs Special, likely a 36-1. Hope this is helpful.

murphydog, yes, he said he found a model number, and it is a 36-1. Thanks.

Was not aware of that "roving J" thing

You said it was a Model 36, that's why I thought it was a standard weight barrel. The Model 36-1 had a 3" heavy barrel and was produced concurrently with the Model 36, which was also offered in 3".

I know the posters in this thread know the difference between the standard and the heavy 3" barrels in the Chief Special. For the benefit of those still on the learning curve, here are comparison photos showing the two (circa 1966).

The heavy barrel is on the left in 1st picture and on the top on 2nd picture.

Nice pictures, but maybe front views would be a good additional illustration
