I owned a Glock 21 for about 3 months. Just could not force myself to like the grip or 2X4 like overall shape. My M&P45 on the other hand is everything that I loved about the G21 and nothing that I hated. It's no 4506-1 (yes, I do love my 4506) but it's an excellent handgun and well worth owning. Enjoy.

Tried one, and still a large piece like the G21. I'm enjoying a S&W 1911 lately and I do love my G30 even though it is a bit fat in the slide. I got lucky on the G30, got it used for cheap. I saw a guy shooting very well with the M&P .45 at the NRA headquarters range in VA last weekend. Maybe I need another piece of combat plastic.

Is it that the M&P 9mm and 40 are more popular guns?

I think compared to the 9mm and 40S&W, the 45 is more expensive, plus more expensive to shoot and ammo has been harder to come by. I have shot fullsize M&P's in 40 and 45, and preferred the recoil push of the 45 to the snap of the 40. The 45 has a quick reset, crisp trigger, points naturally, shoots very accurately right out of the box, fields strips easily, and has interchangeable back-straps. If you are considering the 45, and will ever consider adding Crimson Trace Lasergrips, the lasergrips don't fit the ambidextrous safety model. Before I purchased my 4566TSW, I had really considered purchasing a M&P 45, it really is a great polymer gun, just liked stainless more I guess.

I like all the M&P polymer guns. I have owned six different models. Never had a problem.

Function and reliability of the M&P are equal to Glock but the M&P surpassess Glock is ergonomics.

My newest M&P is the 45 compact. IMO the best compact polymer 45 made.

The only complaint about the M&P 45 is the trigger. Don't know why but they are not as good as the 9MM or 40 guns. I have dry fired mine about 500 times and it's getting better. I will replace the sear eventually.

I think you will like yours.

No experience with the Glock and no intention to ever have any. Hate both the look and feel. Love my M&P 45. Even gone as far as to give it status as my new "house" gun in the safe by the bed. It's that good and reliable. If you search here, you'll find lots of good things written about them.
p.s. The triggers arn't great out of the box but wear in quickly and can easily be improved by instructions found here /on the web.

The Glock may well be the industry standard for reliability and I can't say without a doubt that the M&P is its equal............but after some few thousands of trouble free rounds through my M&P's, which replaced all my Glocks, the M&P is at least good enough. I hear people speak of firing pin problems, or mag problems, or some other issue affecting the Smiths, but have not heard of widespread discussion of those issues.
No Smith has had a KABOOM to my knowledge.
The .45 M&P has about the same grip circumference as a 9MM Glock without the damned hump, and is more ovoid. Feels much better. The 9, .40 and .357 are so much more comfortable than the Glock equivalents that the tide is turning somewhat against Glock, in the area that Smith named their gun after.
The military and especially, police.

I think you should have asked the questions before you bought one.
Don't sweat it, though, you made the right choice.
Even the Glock 21-SF is a stretch for myself (read, not having large hands).
Don't forget the $50.00 rebate OR 2 free mags they are having now until
the end of May!!!! Super deal.
If it is like my 9fs, no worries at all, it just keeps firing.......
Just clean 'em and shoot 'em, repeat as necessary...............
S&W has a Number 1 with this fab four (9,.357Sig, .40, .45).
Sweet and awesome.

I bought the 45 compact a couple of weeks ago, and its awsome. Easy to shoot feeds everything I've put in it, and more accurate than I am. It is now my favorite. My buddy has a glock 22, and while similar to my M&P 40 the M&P just feels better. Having shot several different glocks, I have never bought one. I just don't like how they feel (To each his own, its mainly about personal preference).

I like mine and find it easy to shoot, and no problems. Takes down easy almost Sig like. I can not say it's the most accurate 45 I own, It does not make nice tight groups, I may send it back to SW as it maybe not locking up tight enough. Mine is full size with the manual safety. It is very well made IMO for a polymer gun. The only non stainless or blued/black gun I own.

Both good guns, as we all know. The differences in the stock guns are: better sights, better magazines (admittedly, subjective), interchangeable backstraps, and... a hugely better-feeling (more comfortable), better-pointing weapon.

The S&W is lead-bullet friendly. I like that, since I shoot mostly handloaded .45s with lead bullets. My full-size gun shoots at least as well as I can, given the trigger. (It is nothing to crow about.) I also notice the gun is sensitive to different bullet shapes, but hasten to add that it has never had even a slight hiccup with any factory cartridge - so that comment applies only to my handloads.

Being US-made certainly doesn't hurt my feelings.

The M&P45 is a nice service-grade pistol, but is not going to render the 1911 obsolete. Haven't seen anything yet that does.

I have run into many new shooters at the busy indoor range I go to every week. I conclude that the new guy comes in, does not have a clue what he wants and gets steered to a glock by store employees. I would guess that the profit margin is greater on the glock as opposed to the American made M&P, just my guess.

I have had my M&P 45 midsize for 14 months now. I bought it for my wife but she thought it was too heavy lucky me!!!! I have been carrying this M&P for over a year and I love it. After the first 100 rounds it started shooting dead on. It is not picky about ammo. It will shoot what ever American made ammo I can find. I am a wheel gun man so I ordered this without a safety. It works just like a revolver. Point and shoot. I use a Blade Tech IWB holster. I like the holster but I have been looking for a good leather one. Like everyone has said it fits hand perfectly. You will not be disappointed.

I've owned a M&P 45 FS Dark Earth w/thumb safeties & night sights for almost a couple of years now. I've fired upwards of a little over 3,000 rounds through it, mostly comprised of 3 different duty-type JHP's I've used in recent years.

I've been very pleased with the quality, reliability and practical accuracy of the pistol.

I've enjoyed shooting it from 1-75 yards. If I do my part I can experience small, ragged 1-hole groupings at 15 yards and groups small enough to cover with my hand at 50 yards. This is regardless which JHP's I'm using, shooting from an unsupported 2-handed position.

The trigger was heavier and a bit gritty until I'd fired a few hundred rounds.

It improved even more when I installed one of the recent production revised strikers (from late summer last year).

When my M&P 45 was NIB it produced average readings nudging 9 lbs on my digital trigger pull gauge, and when I recently checked it I was seeing some averages hovering at 6 lbs or slightly lower. The parts in the gun are factory.

Overall, I've been very pleased with it and I'm seriously thinking about ordering a M&P 45c later this year.

I've actually enjoyed shooting my M&P 45 more than my various 1911's.

I have had the M&P9, 40 and now 45FS. After many thousands of rounds I can say they are great pistols.
When you hit 10,000 rounds or so call S&W CS and let them know. If they remain as friendly as I have found them to be you will end up with a new recoil spring/rod assy., striker and perhaps more.

I've had my M&P 45 Full Size for about seven months and I have put about 5,000 rounds thru it. They have all been JHP and it has never had any type of problem. It just shoots and shoots and shoots!

Someone said "If you are considering the 45, and will ever consider adding Crimson Trace Lasergrips, the lasergrips don't fit the ambidextrous safety model."

That's true until you take a Dremal Tool with a fine blade and remove the right side thumb lever. Then it goes on just fine and works great! http://www.crimsontrace.com/Home/Pro...5/Default.aspx

This gun quickly became my everday carry gun. It is the best money I've ever spent on a pistol.

I would also recommend the Blackhawk Sepra CQC holster. It comes with both the belt loop and pancake mounting options. And yes, the gun with lasergrips will fit perfectly. http://www.blackhawk.com/product/SER...,1145,1410.htm

The M&P 45 Full Size with the Crimson Trace Lasergrips and the Blackhawk holster a great combination!

Buy it, you'll like it!

I have a M&P full size .45. It is quickly becoming my favorite .45. I have some trijicon night sights on order for it now and have recently purchased an M&P 9mm Pro. I sold a Glock 34 to raise the funds. You will like this handgun, it really fits my hand well.

Just traded off a G32 for an M&P 45c in dark earth. Love the feel and sweet shooting .45! I was a Glockaholic until last week when I put over 450rds thru a G22 in a day and a half long shooting school for Instructors. The squarish grip frame of the G22 banged my rt thumb so much that it may be permanetly numb!
Owned an M&P 9 since they hit the market. Shot the highest State Guard Qaulification score that year(2007) with a new M&P 9. Out of the box, no break-in. Just loaded it and fired. My practice score was so high I quit the Qual after 1st firing. Amazed a Special Forces CW4 in accuracy and performance. Woot! M&P's, I love 'em!

The M&P .45 is my first smithy but my 4th polymer gun. I absolutely love this weapon from the weight, the look, the backstrap options, and most importantly THE FEEL!!! ... I need the small backstraps and the thing fits like a glove.

I tired attaching a flashlight to the equipment rail, but no matter how hard I torque the screws down (to the point of almost rounding them off, which is coming some day) the unit just inches it's way down the rail after just one magazine.

All in all, it's my bedside weapon atm, so I'm not so worried about the flashlight moving after teh first few shots. It does make carry a bitch, so it's off at the moment .. But, as previous posters have mentioned, these units will eat any .45acp ammo you throw in them ... ANYTHING. I am now the guy who buys the mysterious bag of bullets in the burlap sack the clerck never thought he'd sell, hehe. (but we've got the good stuff for SD

I just installed some Trijicon night sites, and couldn't be happier. They have increased my day time accuracy as well compared to my factory sites. My only complaint, is that it seems the mag springs have crapped out already. I bought the unit from a friend and found two bullets in one mag that has compressed the spring (I didn't think that happened that fast), and my other mag will always jam at the 7th round. where can I get some mag springs, or is this something S&W would help out with?

I'm hoping some springs will fix it...

RAMBLE ON!!!!!

I have four magazines for my MP 40, they have well over 10K rounds with the orginal springs over the past three years. I still do not have any problems with this gun feeding. It could be a magazine problem, however springs are cheap and easy to install. You might look for wear, damage to the lips of the magazine. Good luck.

Bought the 45c and have put about 1,000 rounds through it. Shoots two inch groups at 50 ft, off hand 5, shots of hardball. Like the concept of a comfortable, short grip with a 4" bbl.

Verrrry reliable and best Polymer 45 compact I've owned or shot. I had a Glock 36 and a XD 45c, they were um "ok", but fell in love with the S&W. Liked it so much I purchased a 40C M&P, based on the experience with the 45c.

I have the full size, FDE with no mag safety, no lock. It has the thumb safety.

I got it new in box for $400, from a private seller.

I have nearly 1000rds through it, 150 of that with a Apex DCAEK kit in it.

I really like this pistol and it has replaced my Glock 23 as a daily carry.

My only complaint is a set of spring mags that went south on me soon after purchase.

Outside of that, wonderful gun.
