Default 5906 and 59 - differences

I know the "original" model 52 Smith & Wesson was blue steel-

Other than that, what differences are there between this gun and the 5906?

I realize it may likely be lengthy, but I am looking for a bit of history on the progression of 9mm guns from Smith & Wesson over time, at least up to the 5906

Thanks!

If you're looking for stuff on the 9mm, why are you asking about the model 52? That was a .38 special wadcutter target gun with a single action trigger.

Model 59 is alloy frame, carbon steel slide, no firing pin blocking device and single safety. Stocks attach to the sides of the frame.

The three digit guns added the firing pin safety block, changes to the manual safety-including making them ambidextrous, extractor changes and feed ramp improvements. Stainless became available.

Model 5906 is all stainless, the stocks surround the frame and attach with a pin. There is a firing pin safety block that prevents the firing pin from reaching the primer unless the trigger is held back all the way. Ambidextrous safety and many changes in the internal lockwork.

If you search, you'll find a thread sometime back that goes into extensive detail on the differences.
