Default 500 4" - How Are You Carrying Yours?

Any experience or thoughts with field carry for these? I'm looking for a comfortable rig, what are you using and how do you like it?

Thanks in advance!

Modify one of these to hold the gun instead of the baby, they weight the same right? LOL

Actually, I think the baby may be lighter! LOL

Do those slings come in camo patterns?

I would guess the best carry method would be the "chest holster", which has a shoulder and belt attachment to distribute the weight more evenly. Interestingly, it is the same weight distribution idea as the "snuggly" in the baby photo, but the holster does come in camo ...

I have a Ken Null horsehide holster for my 500 and it's very nice. For a lot of hiking a chest rig would be nice. I have some products from Rob at Simply Rugged and he's a great guy with excellent products.
Great examply below:

I carry a 6 1/2 500 in an A. E. Nelson Leather Co. shoulder holster.

Contrary to popular myths about the 500, it is a comfortable carry not unlike a 4 or a 6" N Frame if it's holster is well designed.

I've hunted for 35 years with N frames not shorter than a 6 inch. Now I use a 500. As a big/dangerous game hunting handgun for which it's intended it's the only way to go. Ask anyone who seriously uses and has carried one.

Default 500 Carry

I pretty much use a holster such as the one pictured by 500 Magnum nut. To be honest I would rather carry something a bit smaller. That's why I'm looking for a 41 mag(plus I've got lots of ammo). The 500 is actually a pretty easy gun to shoot. except for the torque it's not as bad as a 4 inch 29...and definitely better than a 454 Casull. In my opinion that is. And the darn 4 inch one I have is as accurate as I can shoot. If I have to use it on a grizz I'm sure it's gonna be at barroom distances anyway. Only difference between a barroom gunfight and getting attacked by a bear is..the bear ain't shuckin and jivin. He wants to get close..real close If ya ain't been in a gunfight..good for you..No bear..even better.

A heavy gun belt in my opinion is the key to comfort when packing a revolver in a hip holster. I carry my 4" & 5" 500's in a Simply Rugged Holster of the Sourdough Pancake design. I prefer the cross draw carry method but it can be carried strong side as well. For my 8" barrels I like the Ringler Leather "Wyoming Combination Holster". The Wyoming Combination rig is a little spendy but if you plan on keeping your favorite hunting revolver for several decades, then this rig will last you a lifetime as well and it's a dandy. I have the same holster. While belt carry might not be the most efficient from an engineering/weight-distribution perspective, in practical terms I find it to be satisfactory for this gun. For one thing, when I'm in the backcountry in the summer I don't want extraneous straps across my shoulders or back, and don't want the gun in the middle of my chest or under my arm simply because those methods tend to be hotter and more uncomfortable. Hip carry alleviates most of that.

Same here. I believe Galco calls this their DA Hunter. Note the DA belt loops in the photo. Cross draw carry is not too bad with the heavy .500

I think the lady forensic anthropologist, 'Bones', on the FOX TV show of the same name, carries her 4" .500 in her purse. Interesting show, loosely based on a real person. 'Bones' was in an indoor shooting range in the pilot episode. She is as good a shot as her FBI agent cohort.

I had trouble carrying my 4" 625MG... now, my 'carry' is either a 642 or it's bigger brother, a 296, in a Mika pocket holster. I don't think he makes one big enough for the 4" .500! The S&W leather looks even better in person. Something else to 'consider'. I thought I had the 4" .500 out of my system... thanks a lot!

I use a DeSantis camo holster that came with the gun from the factory. It's a hip holster and I carry it on a separate belt other than the one that holds my pants up.

I'm satisfied using an EPS #77 or 88. Whichever the one is with thumbreak. Carries my 4" pretty well.

That David Johnston holster looks nice. I'll just pile on and say that I find a belt rig a pain, you're moving too much weight around. I just have a cheapo Uncle Mikes nylon rig that makes the long barreled .500s a pleasure to carry, hardly notice the weight, not that I carry it much. Don
