Yes, they do lose their brightness, over time. I have one from the 2000 run and the illumination is very, very dim. It isn't a result of the gun being ported. These style sights get dim, with age, on any firearm.

My experience with an L-Comp and a K-Comp is that the tritium sights fade much quicker than the ones I've had on autos, but I don't think it has anything to do with the porting

The original tritium dot on my pre lock PC 585-5 L-comp, still glows sufficiently to see in low light.

I've never heard that rumor previous to this thread, but based on my actual experience with shooting many rounds through the L-comp, it is a false rumor.

Now keeping the port and barrel clean, that is a problem! Regards 18DAI.

The gun is a big catch and some spread stuff like that to turn people off them. The port doesn't hurt the gun the lease bit. A woman will be able to tell you if porting works or not, a strong man won't, because he is strong. And the sights, the older they get the dimber they get.

Smile Night Sights

The sights work on the radioactivity of Tritium, which has a half life of about 12 years. They just get dim with time.

I've got one of the second run versions with the lock and the sight is bright enough but I find it kind of difficult to use. It's hard to find through the rear sight so I end up aiming high since I'm tipping the barrel up to see it over the rear sight. I'm thinking about changing to the XS Express tritium dot front/C&S Extreme Duty fixed rear set up like the one on my 315 Night Guard. It's much easier to see and quicker to pick up.

Mine is also a second run version. The sight is pretty useless as a night sight. I called S&W about a replacement and the lady I spoke with was a little less than helpful, so I gave up. I don't rely on this gun for self-defense at night anyway. One of these days I'll look into replacements from Trijicon or XS or someone, it just isn't really a priority.

This is probably my favorite centerfire revolver. The porting does work, the hotter the load, the more efficiently it works too. Recoil didn't used to be much problem for me, but with shoulder and elbow injuries in the last couple of years shotguns and rifles are not an option and even a heavy recoiling handgun is difficult to manage.

The port on this weapon, for me, makes the .357's feel like .38's.

I've never heard of the port causing the sight to fail, they just naturally lose brightness anyway. I will say the night sights on the L-Comp weren't that good even when new as compared to Glocks and Kimbers.

YES NIGHT SIGHTS DO GET DIM WITH AGE. BUT DO YOU CLEAN THEM? TRY A Q-TIP DIPPED IN ALCOHOL . THEY MAY APPEAR CLEAN; BUT THIS TRICK REALLY BRIGHTENS THEM UP.JIM P

It's my favorite as well. Smooth, incredibly accurate, and very controllabe, even with the hottest loads. It is replacing my Beretta Cougar as a duty weapon. The only changes I'm making to it, other than the sights, is to have the charge holes chamfered (the case mouths hang up when using moonclips) and the front of the cylinder beveled for smoother reholstering. I've considered refinishing it for corrosion protection since I work on and around salt water, but so far it hasn't been an issue.
