Greetings, I recently purchased the M&P Compact .40 and love it. However I have found an issue with it and I am trying to find out if it's by design or if its broken.
Here is the issue,
With the gun unload, slide forward if you try to insert a load magazine it goes about 3/4 into the gun and stops. I thought maybe the magazine was damaged to I tried a second one and got the same result. I unloaded one of the magazines so it was empty and try to insert it in the gun it slid in and locked in place.

Next I removed the empty magazine pulled the slide back and lock it in place the loaded magazine then will insert properly and lock in place. I release the slide it chambers a round, at this point I can eject the magazine and re-insert it without a problem.

From all my testing it appears that you can only load this gun if a round is already chambered or if the slide in locked back. Being prior military and with LE background I have used many different semi autos and never seen one act this way. It could be a safety issue as well, in a fire fight if the slide was to fail and not lock back when the last round is fired it would prevent the user front inserting another loaded magazine.

Has anyone seen this any comments would be welcomed.

Regards
Brian

So you're saying if you load 11rds in your mag it will go in OK? It's not uncommon with Hi-cap guns to need a good slap to seat a fully loaded mag when the slide is down. The pressure on the top round to push it down another 1/8" or so to lock it in can be a chore. It will get better as the springs settle in but you may want to download your mags one round till then.

I had the same thing happen to me the other night. I have had my SW40VE for a couple of months now and have taken it to the range a few times, but the other night when I went to put in my first mag of the night it wouldn't go all the way in. I had to give it a little smack with the pad of my hand to get it to lock in place. This was with the slide not locked back. When the slide was locked back it went in just fine, but with the slide forward it repeated to need a little coxing? The weird thing about it is that I had been to range at least a couple times before the other night and had loaded my gun with the slide forward without much effort? Anybody know why this might happen?

Handgunner356, wish it was that simple it does not matter how many rounds are in the magazine. also the magazine does not even get close to locking in place, it is about 1/2 inch out when it stops. Tapping does not work either I tried and don't want to force it or do more damage.
thanks

The gun and mags should function like any other semi-auto. My 40c mags take a little effort to seat when fully loaded and with the slide in battery, but it can be done without abusing anything. If your dealer is worth consulting, show him your problem and see if he has another gun you can compare with - on the range, obviously!

If he can't help you, you probably will have to make a call to S&W. They will probably want to see your gun and ALL of your magazines. The magazine catch of your pistol may be just a little bit too long, or have a burr or something, or may not fit the slot in the frame properly. (Just some guesses.)

Thanks everyone took it back to the dealer they replaced the magazine catch and it resolved the problem. The are not really sure why but it works and that is what matters. One thing that surprised me, I made calls to S&W no one had any idea at the help line so they transferred me to someone who would know and no one ever called me back. Would have been nice to get a call back!

Thanks Again for all the comments

Brian
