Default T-Rex and Rooty.

I've been dealing with them for years. T-Rex is the mother and Rooty is her son. Dr. E (he's not really a doctor) nicknamed her T-Rex because of her shorter than normal arms. He said she looked like a dinosaur. Rumor has it that her mother had taken thalidomide before she was born back in the 60's. The handicap has never slowed her down. Even with the short arms she's always been able to hold her own in a fight. She and Rooty live in a very old trailer that she bought at a tax sale. Rooty is a tall muscular kid. He's in his mid 20's now. He's dumb as a rock. He drives an old Taurus with no bumpers and different colored doors. He's never had a license or insurance and always has active warrents because he won't pay his tickets which he always gets because everbody in law enforcement knows it. Sometimes the warrents come handy. At some point in time someone beat the car with something. They must not have called us on that one. The road going into the trailer park was never very good and got even worse after the trailer park owner died a few years ago. You can't drive in there after a good rain. There is one other trailer left in there because they, like T-Rex, can't afford to move out. Frogs live in the mudholes.

The first time I met them T-Rex had called and said Rooty was tearing the trailer up again. The call was given to another officer and I was sent to back him up. He called for assistance before I got there. As I arrived Rooty was kicking the glass out of the back door of the patrol car and T-Rex was holding on to the officers back with her short little arms. He managed to throw her off after she bit him a couple of times and after a few minutes we hog tied Rooty and took both of them to jail. Since that incident Rooty has been diagnosed somewhere as bi-polar and some other stuff and gets a check. T-Rex has always gotten one because of the short arms. The second time Rooty decided he wanted to fight he got tased. He's come along peacefully many times since then. His behaviour has magically changed since the tasing. He now gets quiet when we get there regardless of how much hell he raised before we got there. Maybe shock therapy should be researched more.

There have been many fights and arguments at the T-Rex home since I met her and Rooty. I didn't go to all of them but would often come to work and see where one or both of them had been arrested the night before. The charges usually involved fighting with each other or someone else. If someone else was involved they usually worked as a team. Rooty has never liked any of the many boyfriends T-Rex has had. Often Rooty would get in a fight with the boyfriend of the week and T-Rex would join in on his side. T-Rex was going with a recently released child molester who had served ten years. They broke up when he got his parole violated because of a meth pipe and they sent him back to do another five years. When he's not drunk, and sometimes when he is, her newest boyfriend makes a living carving animal figures out of tree stumps with a chainsaw. The bears actually look pretty good when he's not too drunk.

T-Rex has a daughter (Kelly) who shows up occassionally. She moved out when she got married but got divorced last year. A few days ago I went to a domestic call involving her and her ex. They were arguing over their youngest child. I got there just in time to hear her say "I don't know why you care,he ain't yours anyway." She then named the father. I know the alleged father and when I looked at the kid I saw a strong resemblance. She was probably telling the truth. Over the years Kelly would sometimes be involved in the fights at the T-Rex home and when she was she was usually the voice of reason. She actually has some sense.

The last time I personally was called to T-Rex's trailer the call came from the water meter reader. They had locked the water meter because of the $800.00 unpaid bill and when someone mysteriously cut the lock the water company dug up the meter. T-Rex's arms are too short for the job so I suspect that Rooty was the one who had patched into a neighbors water line. The neighbor had been complaining about a very high water bill which led to the water company finding the patch. They filed charges against Rooty and the next time he got into a fight he got arrested for stealing utilities. Did I mention that I love outstanding warrents? Earlier this week we went down there after Rooty and the animal carver got into a fight. I wasn't there and nobody got arrested so I never really found out what the fight was about.

Rooty has a woman he has some kids with. Her name is Bertha. She's a big girl and is somewhat hygeine impaired. She also has a close working relationship with The Department of Human Services because of the kids. I don't think they were ever married. She shows up every now and then. She showed up Wednesday night and she and Rooty got in a loud argument. Rooty was gone when the officers arrived. He understands domestic violence laws and was apparently scared he may have qualified for one again. Bertha stayed at the trailer with the kids and he came back yesterday and they got in another argument. When he tried to leave he got the car with no fenders stuck in the muddy road. The responding officer arrived and found him running down the road away from the trailer. There was no evidence of any kind of assault so the officer arresting Rooty for...."outstanding warrants!"

Things were quiet for a couple of hours. T-Rex and the drunken wood carver had been off somewhere and when they got home and T-Rex found out about Rooty getting arrested again she and Bertha got into it. I'm sure she thought it was Bertha's fault. Bertha dialed 911 on her cell phone and T-Rex left. The officer passed her on the way to the call. "I knew it was her because she was so close to the steering wheel." The drunken wood carver had apparently elected not to go with her so she was in the car by herself. The officer turned around and stopped her. When he told her she was under arrest for failing to appear on old DUI and no insurance charges T-Rex decided it was time for another heart attack. I was listening to this on the radio from another part of the county and laughing because she tried this with me one time. That time I was waiting for her when they let her out of the ER and took her to jail anyway. The officer knew what she was doing but when they claim an illness we're required to get them checked out before we can lock them up. An ambulance was called and she was taken to the hospital ER. I went over to the jail this morning and saw T-Rex being fitted for an orange jump suit. She'll be with us for a few weeks working out the fines down in the jail kitchen. I saw Rooty out on the road gang picking up trash this morning. It won't be long and they'll both be back out and we'll be back at their trailer for something else. I've got job security.

Mississippi is so much better than Georgia. Wisconsin is down-right boring. Ain't been there since '78.

Great story! You've got a knack for making real-life issues
interesting, as opposed to just sad. I enjoy hearing about the local
newsmakers.
Thanks, TACC1.

It's really too bad Fox already has "Jerry Springer" ... I caught a bit of that at the gym the other night and cringed. I'd much rather watch "Charlie Sherrill". It's got everything... trailer parks, birth defects, who's-ya-daddy, po-leese, warrants, ambalampses ... everything!

Thanks as always, Charlie!

I think they have distant relatives in Texas, Charlie. Or at least they have all read the same manual of arms for trashy behavior.

Hi, Charlie:
I also have observed that "Tasering" changes lions into meek sheeps.

Yep, and as I point out so often about the people in Charlie's stories, most of them have children in the public school system.

In pre election scenarios Jesse Jackson cruses Cook County jail (Chicago) for non felons or pre felony conviction prisoners. What a great guy!

I don't know about the Andy G. of Miss., but he sure holds his own on a good story! He's just as interesting on a live tale, also. Keep up the good reading,my friend.

Just more proof that we spend 95% of our time dealing with 5% of the population.

It seems to me the 5% have died off or calmed down around here. We used to be in a fight with them every week. I think that is what they lived for, call 911 and run out of the house swinging when we arrived. Now there all just high on crack or meth and arn't any fun at all. Darn I miss the old days. If we all posted our stories we would be laughing for days. I bet all the stories are similar though. Stupid people are job security.

I retired just as the Tasers were comming into their own in LE.
Prior to that, OC had been a pretty good fight stopper when they weren't cracked out, tuned up on meth or PCP.
Then it was stick city.
I can remember having to go to Sap School at the Treasury Academy at 1310 L. St, NW before you could carry a 10" Texan.
