Default 19-4 rear sight NEW ? Hard Opening Cylinder?

I was brought this ruffy by my Chief who asked if I could clean it up. He said it belongs to his buddy and it's his first duty weapon.

Nickle 19-4 that works but has not been cleaned in ages and it was dropped as the rear sight blade is broken and bent.

I went to look for a part number for the rear sight blade via SW website and it says see chart. what chart are they referring to?

dont laugh...not my gun

I don't know what chart they are referring to, but if you call them and give them the model number, I'd be suprised if they just didn't send the replacement blade and mounting hardware to you free of charge. They are darn good about that kind of stuff at S&W.

Looking at Brownell's site, they show a .146" sight blade for a 4 to 6 inch barrel Model 19, but they are out of stock. You will need the sight blade, rear sight adjusting screw and the nut also. I have a .146" rear sight blade with no white outline, and I can send you the screw & nut, if you will replace them for me. The sight blade is no charge. Call S&W and see if they have the kit in stock, if not let me know and I will send you the parts. I'll need your address again too.

thanks Bill. Let me call SW tomorrow and get a kit.

I will PM ya tomorrow.

the nickle is cloudy and has some green tint in some areas. can this be "Flitzed" out.

the nickle is speckled if I am saying it right. just looking to clean it up and return it, not trying for show room smoothness.

Flitz or Semichrome should clean the nickel nicely. A replacement blade should be easy to find, as stated earlier Brownell's should have a kit for about $10. The kit should contain the blade, screw and nut but may, or may not have the detent or spring. When you take the old blade out be sure to catch and save the detent and spring (order extras because when these puppies fly, and they do, they hide in the darkest corners).

That's a beauty!

.146 blade height. Part numbers, black assem 05787, 05109
white outline 04091, 05900

Copied from the faq:

Removing Rear Blade

To swap the rear blade:

When changing the rear blade on S&W revolvers, turn the windage screw clockwise until the screw breaks. Then remove the nut by unscrewing if from the base. Use a plastic bag to catch the tiny spring and plunger that is located inside the screw head.

Reinstall the parts and tighten the retaining nut fully then back it off ¼ turn. Use the stacking tool and crimp the nut. Job done!

Tools look like this:

Rebuild kit looks like this:

Different barrel lengths require different height sight blades. If you haven't changed a blade before, a full kit includes instructions. It isn't difficult at all, BUT, when you back the windage screw all the way out the detent plunger and spring (which are very TINY) may fly away to location unknown unless you capture them. Hint, put it all in a large clear plastic bag before backing the screw all the way out so it won't get away. Good luck.

I cleaned this piece up and other than some dings and minor cosmetic flaws in the nickle, this gun seen more holster time than shooting.

anyway, after putting it back together I noticed it opens hard or sticky (Cylinder) on three cylinders and the other three it opens normal or smooth.

Rotating the cylinder, I noticed the ejector rod does not rotate square, straight (very slight) but enough to cause a hang up on cylinder opening.

what is the fix to square up?

again, not looking for perfection, but if someone gives me something to fix/clean up, I would like to return it fixed. its not broke, just want it right.

My guess the culprit to the ejector rod issue was poor handling and probably slamming the cylinder closed.

any advice or home repair remedies will be appreciated. My Kuhn manual is currently not available.

I will check FAQ too.

thanks in advance
