The Marines lost out on the initial issues of the Garand: in 1941 they were conducting a long and very comprehensive test at Camp Pendleton, CA. Their primary interest was to see that their boy, Melvin M. Johnson (Cpt, USMCR) wasn't given short shrift for his rifle, the Johnson, when the Army adopted the M1. The story of the test is fascinating, some of it is told in "War Baby" by Larry Ruth. They used the well known Springfield as a control, and fired the m1, the Johnbson and two experimental rifles from Winchester (one of which, reduced in size, became the basis for the M1 Carbine). The test conclusively proved the M1 was the best weapon. Because of the delay, the Marines lost their place in line and it took a while to equip them with M1s.
