Default Cleaning matte nickel firearms

I am trying to get some stains (looks like carbon) off of the matte nickel portion of the slide on my 39-2. I tried gun scrubber, acetone, and K-1 carbon remover. My local gunsmith suggested ethanol. One forum thread suggest Happich's Simichrome but I am afraid that may do more polishing than stain removing. Any suggestions? Help!
