Default Another Price Check Thread M66 3"

I know this came up recently but I cannot find the thread.

My local pusher has a M66 3". I didn't fully check it out but I think its NIB with all the goodies. They seem to think its one of 2500 made but the SCSW say 5000 were made. They are asking $1050 for it, Id guess they take 1K for it. yeah or nae.

At first I was kinda like, its nice but I dont need it or really want to spend another grand. After sleeping on it I gained an interest in it. Why is it when I have the cash in my pocket, these things dont show up. When I buy something else then more just seem to show up after the money is spent...

It's no deal, but probably not a rip off. Based solely on my recollection of some Gunbroker sales $1k is on the high end of fair market value if it's NIB or LNIB. Nice ones, but not NIB or LNIB, seem to be closer to $800. They seem to be on everyone's wish list.

I'd guess that is a bit high. Whether or not it is worth the extra few hundred dollars between "its current value" and its value to you is the dilemma. If you take good care of it, it will eventually sell for the price you pay now, in inflation-reduced dollars.

don't see many NIBs for sale...but used ones usually fetch $700-$800 on GB

dash #, or serial#??

according to a S&W letter, 4195 were made for Ashland (May '85...serials AER, AHJ, AHL, and ANA).
Afterwards, 3" 66s were produced on special request for various distributors...bringing the total production to "well over 5000 units".

Here's a Gunbroker link for a NIB that sold for $1,099.

Smith & Wesson Model 66-2 3 Inch NIB : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

My guess is that the seller is aware of this sale, and it has now "set the market" for these. Time will tell if the market adjusts up or down. I should add that my valuation guess is based on the -2 model. The -2 models are the most desired. Higher dash numbers mean a lower price.

OK, my curiosity go the better of me. I took a look at this gun today. Its a 66-3 with a BXU (I think, I know its B) serial number. No box, no nothing. It been fired at least 6 shots (factory?) Its clean, nice and well over priced. They insist that only 2500 were made ever, as per the blue book?

Needless to say I wont be buying it...

Thanks!!

If you are a seriouse collector and looking for an unfired NIB one they pop up occasionally but not too often.
Around thses parts used ones are in the $500 to $650 range .
Once fired that NIB loses that NIB premium.

Do you really want a $1000 collector or would you be happier with one at half that you can shoot.
