Default How do you locate old grip screws?

I know it's tough.

For example, I have a 1960 Model 27 that is mint other than a buggered grip screw (magnas, not targets) that it came with. Where would you guys start?

I start in my basement and my woodpile. I find a ratty old set of lumber and trade the screws. Then the next cycle, all I have are ratty screws!

Then at gun shows when some ex-armorer comes along with a bag full of take-off grips, most worn to death, I still pay up his $20 or so.

I always look under the bench.... it seems that is where they disappear to....

Sorry I just couldn't help myself....

P.S.

I haven't had as much fun since the "Can you date this Colt" thread on ThefiringLine. Sad isn't it?

Default Have 'em made

I have turned and threaded replacements on my lathe from stainless rod then cut the slot with a saw on a vertical mill. Polished the head and the exposed threaded end and it appears to be as shiny as plating. I've made a few for odd grip requirements on S&W and other old revolvers. It takes some time to do but maybe a machinist friend would accomodate you. You might even consider making from drill rod and have it plated and still come out cheaper than $20 for a single screw.

Default Try S&W

I contacted customer service, they sent me one N/C. Took like 2 days regular mail on their dime.

Just a last resort

You can dress up the head of a buggered screw numerous ways.
Use of a bench grinder if you have a steady hand is the fastest way - files and emery cloth is slower but safer.
With a little practice you can make it look new again

Default Old Grip Screw

Another alternative is to get a set of all purpose grip screws and escuteons (sp?)from Brownells. They're extra long and ca be cut to fit.
