9mm 115grain bullet vs. 147 brain bullets p.o.i
hello;
have a s&w 5903 and a 5906. each pistol has the same size front and rear sights. both shoot @3" low at 10 yards with 115 grain defense (non +p) loads. got to wondering if these pistols sights are calibrated for 147 grain bullets.
is there a big difference in point of impact between the 115 grain bullet and the 147 grain bullet?
looking for a simple fix before replacing sights.
thanks for any input.

Just shoot 124's. They are the best over all weight slug for a 9mm IMHO. And both of my 9mm are dead on with 124's. 115's low, 147's high.

I try to shoot as many different brands of ammo and bullet weights as possible out of every gun that I own. I do this because dozens of guns and thousands of rounds have shown me that each gun can and often does produce different POA/POI. I have found this to be true even when using the same model gun with all features the same (barrel length, sights, grips, etc.). As you can see in the above chart, my S&W 3913 groups 115 Remington ammo to point of aim at 15 yards. It groups 147 Ranger ammo 1/2" low at the same distance. My S&W 639 shoots 115 UMC to point of aim at 15 yards and also shoots 147 Ranger and 147 +P reloads to the same POI. The biggest difference that I see in shooting 9mm is out of revolvers. My S&W 940 shoots 115 Winchester (white box) to 15 yard POA/POI. The same gun shoots 115 lawman 2 1/2" high at the same distance. I hope that this info helps.

I had a problem with my 3913 shooting low with every type of ammo I tried. I even changed out the front sight. I later found it I changed from a 6 o clock hold to covering the target that it was right on

I concur. Speer 124+P Gold Dot HP. Good enough for the NYPD, good enough for me.

Almost all elivation fixed sighted, defence/combat handguns I've owned tend to shoot POA ( i.e. group is covered by sight not above as in target shooting) with Mil-Spec/Issue ammo. You have to remember the designed purpose of the gun.
Example: 158 gr for 38 spl, 230 gr for 45 acp and 115 for 9mm.
As Datsun's link points out, my guess is either: a) your bullet is still rising (and would correct itself by 50' or so) and/or b) the trigger break is causing you to snap the muzzle down as the shot goes off.
In any case the 124 gr or 147 gr should help. I'm also finding that the slightly heavier bullets seem to group better out of my 9mm guns.

My Glock 17 shoots 124 and 147 gr. to the point of aim and the 115 gr. 1 inch low. The S&W M&P9Pro I own shoots 115 and 124 gr. 1 inch high and the 147 gr. almost 2 inches high. My S&W 99 shoots the 124 gr. 2 inches low and the 147 gr. to point of aim. The Dan Wesson PM-9 shoots all three bullet weight to approximately the same point.
