Default 617 6shot to 10 shot

I just picked up a nice 6" M617. I was wondering if I could get it converted to a 10 shot. Has anyone ever done this or is it too much to deal with?

Thanks
Mike

I went the other direction, changed my ten shot to a six shot. I think S&W charged me $130 to do the work and supply the parts. I'm betting it will cost the same for you.

As a side note I was really surprised to recieve my pistol badly out of time from the factory after the conversion. Had to send it back to the factoy to get that taken care of. Now its my favorite shooter.

Why did you change from 10 to 6? Accuracy? I want more shots /per cylinder.

Thanks
Mike

I changed one of mine from 10 shot to 6 shot too. I didn't like the alloy cylinder and I don't like anything over 6 shots in a revolver. If I want more shots, than I will get a semi-auto.

I did the conversion myself. Bought a new 6 shot cylinder from Brownell's or Midway I think, and I had an extra hand. The hardest part was filing the ratchets, but I took my time and the gun times nicely and shoots great.

Don't ruin a 6 shooter by turning it into a 10... unless it has the zit.

I had a 6" 6-shot... Loved it!

Later, I picked up a 4" 10-shot, along with some DS-10 speedloaders, and the 6-shot stayed home. I looked into converting it to a 10-shot as well. Parts are available from Brownells... you just need the cylinder and hand, if I remember correctly. The trick is filing the teeth on the ratchet to fit properly. Not an overly difficult job I was told, but I decided not to take it on, so I looked to S&W Service and calculated in shipping costs... To net, I sold the 6-shot and bought a 6" 10-shot. Bottom line, I'm using the gun for steel challenge. I have never looked back.

I also had the Performance Center switch a 10-shot Model 17-8 to a 6-shot one with a SS cylinder. I *hated* that alloy cylinder. I blamed it for the gun leading up badly, it was difficult to clean and to extract fired cases from.

The PC did it right! It is among my most accurate revolvers. The cost was also around $130-40. They also tuned the trigger and closed the b/c gap to about .002" as I asked and didn't even charge me for it. That was about 4 years ago.
